I suggest the Seidio Obex instead
By Chris
When I found out about the Lifeproof case for the S4, I waited for it to be released because I knew how awesome the iPhone 4 and 5 cases were. The only other waterproof case for the S4 was the Seidio Obex. I finally got the Lifeproof Fre from Lifeproof directly shortly after it was released. I had so many problems with it. The build quality is extremely odd, and you can't even feel the buttons on the phone anymore. I couldn't hear music well through the speakers, and I could not understand people on the phone, and they said I sounded underwater and terrible when the case was on. Bottom line is that this case makes the calling part of your phone almost useless. It also greatly muffles the sound quality, and in my opinion the build quality is not that great.
After returning the Lifeproof, I purchased the White and Gray Seidio Obex. That case is infinitely better. I compared it to my girlfriend's iPhone 5 White and Gray Lifeproof, and they are so similar. The Obex is even better quality than her iPhone 5 Lifeproof. The sound is amazing, I have no issues hearing music or people on calls, and they have no issues hearing me. The case feels sturdier, and it also is much easier to take on and off. If you are looking for a quality waterproof case for the Galaxy S4, don't get the Lifeproof. You will just be disappointed in the end, just like me.
If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask!
P.S. I don't mean to make this sound like I work for Seidio or got a free case from them. I paid for my Seidio case and am in no way affiliated with them. I just want to save others the hassle of buying the Lifeproof and having so many issues, as I did.

A few minor but tolerable issues on an otherwise great case.
By J Loomis
I've had this case for about a week now and, having toyed around with it and read the other reviews I've made a few discoveries. These may be unique to my own experience, so bear that in mind.
I'll start off with the case design: I love the look of it. It's noticeably smaller than my previous Otterbox Defender case, and I like the fact that the home button is enclosed. The Otterbox's screen protector left this button open and, as a result, dust would get underneath the screen protector and make a mess of everything. The complete enclosure of this case prevents this from being an issue. I also like how the back of the case is clear, although I'm sort of concerned of what would happen if I dropped the phone onto a pointed object. All of the buttons function as they should with no issue, and the screen is perfectly responsive. I have noticed that hitting the back and menu buttons requires more precision due to the size of the center button's enclosure, so this may be an issue for those with larger fingers.
In terms of call quality, I noticed the same sound distortions as other reviewers from the earpiece. I also noticed, however, that turning down the volume helped immensely. I have the earpiece volume set to around 20-30% and the sound comes through clearly enough to be understood easily, and at an audible level. Before this case I had the volume set around the 70-90% mark and still found myself frequently saying, "Huh?" and, "What?" Regarding the microphone, nobody I've spoken to has had any trouble understanding me when using the phone normally. I have been told that when using it on speaker mode that it sounds like I'm speaking underwater, but I have no issues hearing them. I don't use speaker mode that often so this isn't really a problem for me. Regarding ringtones, games and music, the rear speaker comes through clearly with very little distortion, and I have no volume issues.
Regarding the case's protective qualities, I have found no issues at all though I haven't tested the limits. I have done the mandatory take the phone in the shower test and the phone remained completely dry and functional. I have dropped the phone from waist height (around 4 feet - I'm tall) and the phone took no damage, and the case shows no evidence of being dropped. Lastly, I bought the case at the beach and the case and phone have returned safe and sound to my home with no signs of sand, which cannot be said for my car, shoes, or luggage. However I did not go out of my way to expose my phone to the sand. As I briefly mentioned earlier, this is much better than my old case as the dust would get in under the screen protector from the home button, which rather defeats the purpose of a screen protector if you ask me. Also, don't forget that Lifeproof offers a warranty not only on the case, but on the phone itself should it be exposed to water if you opt for the total water protection program.
A few other minor notes - I noticed the o-ring on the included auxiliary cable is not very keen on staying where it should be. This cable is also very difficult to get in and out of place. I'm a little concerned about the durability of the auxiliary port cover due to the material and the thickness of the piece it attaches to. I'd much prefer a similar design to the charging port. Verizon's car charger with the touch-sensitive LED will NOT fit into the charging port so it's possible some other charging cables won't fit either, but the factory charging cable fits perfectly fine. Finally, I've noticed that my thumb knuckle tends to hit the home button whenever I open the charging port, but this is just me being nit-picky and hardly has any relevance to the performance of the case.
All in all, I like the case. It's not perfect but if I had to guess it will be improved further from the time I write this review. The problems are for my purposes completely tolerable, but ultimately it's up to you whether the benefits justify the price in spite of the drawbacks.

DO NOT BUY-- Callers can't hear you
By Ryan B.
The case is waterproof. That's good. It is slim, that's also good. But when I try to call someone with the case on, they can't hear me at all. On speakerphone, they can barely hear me, but they say they hear echoes. This is not acceptable for a case I paid $80 for. I called Lifeproof, and since I had already tried the "trick" where you blow really hard into the microphone, which didn't work, they told me to ask for a replacement from Amazon.
