4Defender or Commuter? An Honest Opinion
By kylemag
Protecting a $200 phone is quite a formidable task and a lot of cell phone case companies do not seem to understand protection. They strive for style, design, and aesthetics. To me, this is all nonsense. Otterbox understands the principle of protection better than any other company making these types of products. Fuction is what I am looking for and and this company produces fuctioning cell phone cases. These 4S generation cases share an improved design, mainly with the camera area. I think people were complaining about shadowed pictures and video due to the tight camera cut out. They widened it to ensure the new 8MP camera with not be hindered by a design flaw.

First, the defender technically provides more protection than the commuter and also comes with a handy holster with a clip. However, the defender is bulky and the port covers do not stay as well as the model for the 3GS. Also, I am not a fan of the defender because of the screen protector it comes with. Eventually, particles of dust or grit will work their way into your case and be sandwiched between the screen and the hard plastic film. Then, friction from your finger will scratch the screen up pretty bad (this happened to me). To make matters worse, I put a Zagg shield on it and it basically fused with the screen protector on the defender. I needed to pry the phone off the case and, while doing so, lifted the glass of the phone, creating permanant air pockets in my screen. Not a good scenario at all. The anti-glar films sold at the apple store, however, work fine because they have a smoother, less sticky surface. I would not reccomend this case at all, though, without these screen protectors because without a screen protector, air bubbles will form and distort your view and scratches on the screen will occur. But, if you work construction or another potentially hazardous job, this case with the anti-glare screen protectors may be a better choice then the Commuter series of cases.

The Commuter, on the other hand, offers a balance between versitility and protection. With this case, I can use my Zagg shield and is not peeled up by the case like many do. Also, I love the soft shell on the inside and the hard shell outside. The soft inner allows the port and button covers to be attached to the case and function propperly. This also helps absorb shock. The hard shell allows the phone to slide in and out of pockets very easily, even out of tighter jeans. In addition, it has a much thinner profile than the defender but still provides adequate protection. The ports are still protected from water and it can take a tumble. I've dropped my 4S about 4 times with this case on it, on hard surfaces from pretty significant hieghts (5 feet or so on some) and the case barely even shows it let alon the phone wrapped up inside. Also, by flipping the phone face down, the exposed inner rubber case prevents it from slipping if you needed it to stay put, for instance, in a car. For the average person, the commuter is the superior choice.

However, both cases with the lighter colored silicon soft shells, like white and grey, get dirty easily. They even get stained from dye in jeans. Not a huge deal to me, but might be to some. Overall, these are the two best cases on the market for the iPhone and believe me, I have researched and read up on them all. You must simply decide what your needs are for a case and make your decision.

5Best iPhone 4S case in the market!
By ccauthon
I am very experienced with all the iPhone Otterbox case designs (the defender series, commuter series, and now the APL4 Commuter series) because I have purchased all three, the first two for my iPhone 4 and then the last for my iPhone 4S. I would definitely have to say the Otterbox APL4 Commuter Series Hybrid Case is the best fitting, most protective, and most practical case for the iPhone 4 and 4S.
The defender series is just too bulky, it takes away from the sleek slim look of the iPhone. My defender series actually broke a few months after purchasing from normal wear and tear, even though that series is supposed to be the best protective.
The first generation of the commuter series was a very good case. It was slimmer, while still being protective, but it didn't fit as well as I would like it to.
Now to the Otterbox APL4 Commuter Series Hybrid Case. It just topped the other otter box cases by far. The case fits perfectly and looks great. It show the slim and sleek look of the iPhone 4 but still protecting it. With the hard plastic outer case it doesn't stick when you try to put it in your pocket or pull it out. With this case you can drop it on pavement without breaking (none from experience). Therefore, I highly suggest iPhone users to buy this case over any others. Don't waste your money on the other cases like I did and go with this one.

4Pretty good
By Sara
I bought this for my iPhone 4S. I am happy with the case. The color does not look exactly like the picture, however; the case is actually a lighter blue and not as green. Still, it looks really nice and goes great with my white iPhone. I gave this case 4 stars instead of 5 because the plastic is slippery-- I was hoping it would have more grip. I feel like it could easily slip out of my hands. Additionally, it takes some effort to get the silicone to align with the plastic, and it never exactly lines up quite right, leaving gaps and slightly sharp edges where the two materials meet. This is barely noticeable though.

What I like about this case is that it feels sturdy, yet it isn't so bulky that it cannot fit into my tight jeans. I obviously try to avoid dropping my phone so I haven't seen how well it protects from impacts. Still, I'm pretty confident it'll protect my phone when I inevitably drop it. The silicone plug covers are nice, although the USB cover never seems to fit quite right. Also, the USB cover makes it impossible to dock the phone into an ihome unless you take the case off. Also, the hole on the back of the case that exposes the apple logo leaves the back vulnerable to scratches. I already have a front screen protector so I cut a hole in the back of the otterbox screen protector for the camera and put it on the back of my phone to protect from scratches.

Overall, I would recommend this case to friends and am happy I purchased it.

!! UPDATE: So I've been using this case for about a month and I have to say I still love it. I've dropped it a couple times from waist height onto both tile and hardwood, and the case fully protected my phone. The case is also in perfect condition despite the drops. I recommend this case to clumsy people like myself. :)

1interferes with signal
By all_xs
The case fit over my iphone 5 perfectly and looks great but it interferes with signal reception. The LTE signal I usually get outside my work is blocked when the case is on but fine without the case or with my old silicon only case. It causes more dropped calls too.

1To me the tiny hole for the headphone jack is a deal breaker
By Pretzelcuatl
I agree that this is a solidly made case. $24 for a single piece of plastic - it had better be. I've yet to drop it, so I can't speak for its effectiveness when that happens; it's probably pretty good. However, NONE of my mini headphone jacks fit through the tiny hole provided. This means that every time I want to listen to music, I have to open the case to get access. This means jogging with the case only have on. Kind of defeats the purpose, right? I truly wish I'd discovered this earlier and returned it when I had the chance.

1Buttons have no tactile feedback, No customer support
By Crapyntosh
I decided to try out this case instead of Otterbox.

Problems with the case:

Requires separate screen protector. The one they ship on their website is horrible and doesn't stay on the phone.

No protection of the apple logo on the back.

After you drop Otterbox it's still looks nice, this one is scratched, "metal/plastic" doesn't stick well to the case anymore - bottom line it's ready for the garbage.

No tactile feedback on the power, volume buttons (comparing to nice feel you get from otterbox).

and on my account the worst part - NO CUSTOMER SUPPORT!!!

The item was purchased on their website - after that i tried contacting them twice with no response.

Save your time, money and the phone - go for what worked for you before.

5A comparison to Fitbit One -- The Holistic Wrist
By RST
UPDATE: If you'd like to see my review of the UP24, you can see it here. Copy & paste required if it is not clickable link: http://www.amazon.com/review/R2ZEG4YLT0HZ9Y/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm

UPDATE: Several people were asking what I thought about Fitbit Flex. I got one and compared it to the Jawbone UP here: http://www.amazon.com/review/R1CVXEEYIAIR0W/ref=cm_cr_rdp_perm

A couple weeks ago I received my Fitbit One Wireless Activity Plus Sleep Tracker, Black after a few months pre-order wait. I had it two full weeks, got to know and learn it, and lost it swiftly. The fact that I lost it so easily made me decide to try Jawbone Up-- thinking that if I lose my arm, I've got larger issues... My review will be a comparison of these two devices for those trying to decide between the two. Early spoiler: I recommend Jawbone Up over the Fitbit One for most people. I'll tell you why...

UPDATE: There is an Android app now for the Jawbone UP. At the original time of my review it had not been released. Please check their website for which models have been fully tested/supported.

Hardware itself

The biggest frustration I had with the Fitbit One was that I wanted to use it for daytime activity monitoring and for sleep monitoring. Using it for both activities included moving the device from my belt clip, taking it out of the rubber clip, putting it in the wrist strap, and reversing this process each day. It felt like a chore after a few days, and some mornings I even forgot to put it back on my belt after showering & changing. These issues aren't faced with the Jawbone Up because you can leave it on your wrist at all times-- even in the shower. No annoying loss, no annoying moving it from clip to pouch to clip, no forgetting it at home in the morning. The Fitbit met it's ultimate demise after only its second fall off of my belt. It's so light and in rubber, it didn't even make a sound when it left me and met the ground. It was never found. Long live my FitBit One on however many belts it ends up on before it's lost again terminally...

Battery Life & Charging

Battery life on the Fitbit One can be as much as 14 days. The Jawbone Up is rated for 10. Both devices include a USB dongle for charging, and charge in about the same amount of time. Both charged fine when I used my iPhone charger to USB for their dongle.

Syncing

The Fitbit One bluetooth sync's wirelessly to an iPhone if you want, or to a PC. The fitbit comes with a charging dongle, a bluetooth adapter-- which must be used as it won't work with most or all other bluetooth adapters already built in to a PC. Plan to use up one or two USB slots for the Fitbit One. It's not a constant sync-- you have to initiate the sync if you want it to sync "now". Update/clarification: It does sync automatically on bluetooth if you use it with your phone, but not constantly. You can force a sync any time you want.

The Jawbone Up syncs by removing the cap and plugging in to the headphone jack of the iPhone. At first this felt like it may be a step back from the Fitbit One, but ultimately it's simpler and I waste less battery having bluetooth activated on the phone all the time. It's simple, works reliably, and you can sync to multiple devices if you want.

Wearing

The FitBit One is quite small and the rubber belt clip is smooth and small. Many users simply drop the device in the pocket, but I'm not one to let that happen and risk loss-- ironic because I lost it via the belt clip. I also have some belts that it would't clip on, so I found myself doing creative things like clipping it inside my change pocket.

The Jawbone Up is basically a bracelet-- and a stylish looking one at that. I found that the fitment guide on the back of the box ran a little large, so I originally bought a medium. After wearing, it felt too tight. I returned it for a large. I have so far been very happy with the large size. I recommend using the print out PDF from the Jawbone site as it clearly marked me as large when the plastic guide on the box made me think medium. They recommend going "up" a size.

From a daytime perspective, the wrist band of the Up hasn't bothered me at all, and actually I see it and it reminds me to move! I never saw the Fitbit One, and thus thought about it less often and had fewer reminders. More about reminders in functions/software!

I do wear the Jawbone Up in the shower, and have had no issues with that so far. It feels sturdy without feeling stiff. You can manipulate it by squeezing to fit tighter, looser, reverse which side meets which, etc. It isn't a "bendy straw" style where it holds shape. It always holds the wrist shape. The rubber on rubber is what lets it grip more or less. It doesn't feel heavy or annoying.

Software

Aside from the functionality of wrist vs belt clip, the software is really what differentiates the Jawbone Up from the Fitbit One for me. The Jawbone Up software is infinitely more useful, visually appealing and informative for me than the Fitbit One software. The Jawbone software tracks your performance over time and so does the Fitbit One-- but the Jawbone analyzes your data and makes observations-- "Hey you had 2x your normal amount of deep sleep last night-- did you do something different?" and other observations like that. You can also compare your sleeping data to your day's activities. The ability to view, review, and drill down/compare your data is easier/simpler/more automated and more enjoyable on the Jawbone Up than on the Fitbit One.

Fitbit supports some more social features-- like sharing to Facebook. Both support having friends in the system who also have the device that you can view/cheer on, etc.

As far as food logging goes, I'm not a huge user of this feature yet. What I do know is that the Jawbone Up supports scanning barcodes on food to capture what it is and content. The interface to browse and add food is far more visually appealing in the Jawbone Up than in the FitBit software.

About sleep monitoring: I don't know if it's accuracy or philosophy, but from a span perspective both units were accurate. I actively tell them when I am about to drift off and when I'm done sleeping. From there, the data varies. The Fitbit One would say that I woke up some 20 - 40 times per night! Maybe each time I roll over it thinks that qualifies as awake, I don't know. The Jawbone Up rates that much less, but also gives me info on "deep sleep vs light sleep and awake times" which I find more useful than just knowing how many times I was awake. I've found this analysis interesting because some nights I'll feel like I slept all night, but don't feel rested in the morning, and the Up will conclude that I didn't have much deep sleep at that night. That allows me to look back at my day before and contemplate why: too much caffeine too late? Too little exercise? Too much food to late? etc. Helpful data to influence how you live your days.

Both of these devices sync your data to a website. I personally rarely visit either of these, and don't plan to, thus my lack of review on that regard. In the iPhone age I only go to a PC when it involves a lot of typing, for the most part.

Functions & Added Benefits -- most of my conclusions here are about the Jawbone Up.

Fitbit One: It has an altimeter. This is how it guesses how many flights of stairs you've climbed. It also counts dual propeller flights I found accidentally on a recent business trip. If your'e a person who is not interested in tracking sleep or want to spend the least, this device could help you start getting an idea of your day & night activities.

Jawbone Up:

-A "power nap" feature that utilizes data from your normal light sleep cycle at night to determine optimum number of minutes for a power nap under 30 minutes. You can initiate a power nap by a series of button presses on the wrist band.

-An inactivity reminder: The wrist band can vibrate you every so many minutes that you're inactive, and you can configure this in the iPhone app

-A wake up alarm, at a custom time and you can additionally have it wake you at "an optimum time around your alarm" depending on your sleep cycle

Both devices allow you to customize your stride or calibrate the distance walked.

I'm still only in my first week of owning the UP, and I prefer it over the Fitbit One. To me, the Jawbone Up is more of a "holistic life data device" due to the software and the fact that you can wear it all the time. The FitBit fits more in the fitness data device for me, because of the lack of insight the software provides on the phone and the fact that it isn't as simple and easy to wear all the time. I'm an IT guy who spends too much time in front of computers, a lot of time traveling, and generally not feeling like I am active enough. I wanted these devices to help me improve my awareness of wellness, activity and sleep results. For me, the Jawbone Up was the right answer all along.

You might know that a year ago the Jawbone Up was released and recalled within a month. There were some technical reliability issues and the company took the opportunity and almost an entire year to rework the device, refund all customers and let them keep the potentially failure-likely device. They have some impressive videos at their website about how they re-worked the device.

Both devices are good devices and neither had any critical flaws. n that, I hope this review may have helped you decide which fits your needs most. I plan to respond to any specific questions below so feel free to ask!

4Up - What it is, How it works & Why use it...
By J. Russell
So you buy the wristband and get the Up app on your iPhone. When you first connect the Up wristband to your iPhone it will give you a brief rundown on how it works and setup an account for you. After that it starts collecting your data.

Here is how it works... You wear the band 24/7. During the day it records when you are doing nothing, doing a little, and when you are doing a lot of activity. I tested the distance calibration with a GPS and it is actually fairly accurate; so it also records the distance you walk or run. All this happens without any input from you.

When you go to sleep... You press a button (on the band) to switch to sleep mode. When you wake up you press the button again to tell the band your day has begun. While you slept Up recorded information about your rest. Using Up's sensor the band knows how long you took to fall asleep, how many times you woke up, and whether you were in deep or light sleep. It also knows how much time time you spent in these different states. Now you connect the band to your iPhone and all your data is loaded into the app, which on my iPhone 5 runs very well. The Up app gives you visual and numeric representations of your data. The data is actually interesting information, especially relating to how you currently feel. The more days you log the clearer picture you get. This is the basic utilization of the band and app. You have to do at least this much.

And the Up band extras... It can be used as an alarm clock to silently wake you up. It can also alert you if you have done nothing (idle alarm) in a set amount of time during specific hours. For activities that the motion sensor will not represent well (like biking) you can press the wristband's button to record an activity. This activity can be viewed or edited separately from the other activity information. This is helpful. The only other thing the band does is wake you up from a mid-day nap if you need one. This PowerNap feature takes into account your sleep history, then monitors your nap, and wakes you up at an optimal time to be refreshed in the shortest time.

And the Up app extras... The app is organized very well, but also fairly limited on what you can do. You can set your current mood with emoji type smily faces. You can connect with other Up users and if you like, share your information with them. You can edit your activities, set goals to meet, and review your data. Graphs and charts can be utilized to look for trends over days, weeks, or months. You can also log what you eat using the app. This final piece of the Up app is also the most difficult to use and understand. While the food logging part of the app is extensive and powerful, everything else is so simple and easy to use, making it seem daunting. You have to put some time in to figure it out. Once you figure it out you can track your food intake and all the nutritional information that goes with it.

The wristband is very light and comfortable to wear. Without bluetooth wireless syncing it has an incredible 10 day battery life. Syncing via the headphone jack on the iPhone takes just seconds and only needs to be done twice a day. Personally I prefer a few seconds syncing rather than charging the band every few days to accommodate bluetooth. Overall the Up band/app combo is good and a decent starting point. And the one characteristic of the Up wristband I appreciate the most... people don't think it's electronic! Without this added attention it disappears into your everyday life, which I believe is the whole point of a device like the Jawbone Up.

1Two (now FOUR!) Ups down, no refund
By D. McGrath
What a cool premise! Everything the Up was supposed to do appealed to me.

I got my first one a bit over 2 months ago. It was awesome. Until it stopped working. Well electronics aren't foolproof. So I informed them of my experience and they said they'd send a replacement. While I was waiting for it to arrive I mentioned that I expected the 60 day return policy would reset with my new band, but I was told it did not. I thought that was odd. I would expect to get two months of uninterrupted service to decide if I wanted to keep it, but that clearly is not their policy.

Now as of yesterday my second band is also dead. No lights, no vibration, no charge or sync, and resets don't work. Frustrating!

I asked for a refund and was told I'm outside my 60 days - which according to them start from the day you order the product! Mine took well over a week to arrive, and I waited for another week for the replacement. I have had a functioning band for less than 60 days but they refuse to bend. I am stunned by the poor consumer experience.

Bottom line, the band fails way too easily and often for me, and you have no recourse if you're out of the 60 day window. I would avoid this product, and I would avoid this company.

***** Update after 6 months ******
I have now made my way through 4 up bands, and each one has failed on me in about the same time frame. I think I am still under warranty, but honestly I no longer have the energy to go and get another band only to have it fail on me in another couple weeks. I still love the idea of activity and sleep tracking, but this product clearly isn't engineered to be robust enough to provide a solution for more than a couple months at best. Very disappointing.

5Slick design, lightweight, solid noise cancellation and easy listening
By Jerry Saperstein
In our era, the collection of matchbook covers from a thousand restaurants and bars has been superseded by the gaggle of abandoned and unloved Bluetooth headsets. My Plantronics Voyager 510, though, has seen a lot of Bluetooth headsets come and go in its time. For some reason, the 510 has remained my most often used BT headset, despite its very weird power adapter connector.

But the Plantronics Voyager Pro HD may be the new kid on the block and quickly become my go-to Bluetooth headset.

The Pro HD is a beautiful piece of design. It weighs practically nothing and the housing is perfectly designed to slip over and balance on your upper ear. I've worn it for several days now and, with one exception, have almost forgotten it was there. The exception is when I put on or take off my glasses - that requires some maneuvering simply because there isn't that much room between my skull and my ear. So I have to make sure everything is arranged just right.

Plantronics has winnowed down buttons and functions to arrive at an efficient and minimalist three buttons. The Power Button has three functions: 1) power on or off, 2) battery voice level alerts and 3) pairing activation. This last, after so many headsets that force me to remember arcane combinations of two buttons, is a blessing. Hold the power button down until the LED flashes red/blue and you're good to go.

The Volume/Mute Buttons also have three functions: 1) adjust volume level, 2) mute the mic (with a 1 second press of volume + and buttons) and 3) pause/play streaming audio. These buttons are generously sized and rise just a bit above the surface of the case for quick and sure operation.

Finally the Call Button allows you take or end a call, redial, initiate voice dial (if your phone supports it) and reconnect lost connections between the headset and device.

Set-up is dirt simple: hold the power button down for a couple of seconds until the LED flashes red/blue and pair I with your device. I paired it with my Lenovo laptop and Motorola Photon 4G phone in just a few seconds without hassle. The headset will support two device connection profiles.

The Voyager Pro HD is capable of A2DP so you can steam music, podcasts, GPS announcements and the like from a suitably equipped phone or other device. Remember, though, that not all phones and computers support A2DP. Mine do and the unit performed well with Pandora and other streaming audio. Volume could be higher but, frankly, if my hearing were better I probably wouldn't complaining. The headset, by the way, ships with a medium eartip installed and small and large ones in the box. I'm going to try the small eartip to see if I can get a better seal to block extraneous noise.

The microphone is supposed to be noise-cancelling and my tests to date indicate that it does a pretty good job. I tested it with a few online recording services, dictating to Audacity sound editing software and in chatting with people. The humans reported they could hear me clearly and I was, frankly, surprised by the clarity of my voice on the recordings. At some point, I will test it with Dragon Naturally Speaking to see how it works with voice recognition software.

The Voyager Pro HD has sensors and can recognize when the headset is being worn. This is pretty neat stuff. You don't have to keep the headset on your ear all the time. Leave it off and when you put it on to take a call, the headset turns on. Very neat! Likewise, if you leave the headset off and there is an incoming call, the headset will route the call to the phone.

As with many headsets, an incoming call stops audio streaming.

Battery life is excellent, in excess of four hours talk time and I don't know how long it will actually last in standby. Charging is via a standard microUSB port. Plantronics includes an AC adapter and a separate USB cable. Nice of them.

A one-year basic subscription to Dial2Do is included, under the Plantronics Vocalyst branding. Dial2Do is an interesting service allowing you to leave reminders, send and listen to emails and texts - if you pay for an upgraded subscription, post to Twitter and Facebook, connect to EverNote and a little more. It is a pricey service, so check it out thoroughly before you become too enamored of it.

Overall, this is a beautiful Bluetooth headset, not only in terms of the sleek and smooth design, but in the feature set as well. From the simple three-button operation to the excellent noise-cancelling microphone and the pretty good audio output. My favorite feature, though, is the weight and fit of the unit. I can put it on and wear it for hours without any discomfort. That, to me, is very, very cool.

2Unpleasant audio; incomplete automatic behavior
By M. Kobb
I purchased this headset from a local store, not from Amazon, because I needed it immediately. But, I read the reviews here and I had high hopes that it would be a great headset for me.

Unfortunately, while the headset has several innovative features and is comfortable and well made, two issues have caused me to return it.

I should start by saying that I used the headset with the iPhone 4S.

First, the good. The headset is comfortable and easy to put on and take off, although the large piece that goes behind the ear is difficult to put on while wearing my Oakley M-frame sunglasses (I have to move the temple on the glasses, put on the headset, then put the glasses back in place). People I called reported that the audio quality was very good. I like that the unit has real volume buttons and a real "answer" button. I like that it shows battery level on the iPhone's screen. I like that when you turn the headset on, if it's on your ear, you hear it report the expected talk time remaining via speech. Bluetooth reception was adequate.

The proximity sensor is a great idea, and some aspects worked well. I *really* liked being able to answer a call or switch to the headset just by putting it on my ear. I will miss this feature a lot! On other headsets, I've had problems where I have been speaking on the handset, and I happen to walk through a room where my Bluetooth headset is sitting. When the headset comes into range, the call switches to the headset, and mayhem ensues. This headset won't do that, because it "knows" that it's not on your ear.

Now, the issues.

First, the audio is, in my opinion, trying too hard to be "HD". It sounds to me as if there is a substantial treble boost applied, so when listening to speech (either on the phone or via A2DP on a podcast), sibilant sounds like "S" are over emphasized and actually a bit painful to have blasted right into the ear. I think the audio would also benefit from some applied dynamic range compression, particularly on phone calls. When driving, if I turn the headset up loud enough to reliably hear the other party, those sibilant sounds are excruciating. And, when the other party happens to shift their own telephone so that their voice gets a bit louder, you really get blasted. Reducing the dynamic range would be entirely appropriate for telephone audio.

Second, despite the great aspects of the proximity sensing feature, it is a bit unreliable, and also not well implemented for A2DP. I had several occasions where putting the headset down on a table caused the proximity sensors to believe that it was on my ear, and this caused paused audio from the iPhone to resume playing -- through the headset I'm not wearing. Result: lost place in my podcast. More bothersome, it continues to accept A2DP audio even when it knows that it's not on your ear. On the iPhone, this means that all iPhone audio signals like text alerts, key clicks, sound effects, etc, are sent to the headset sitting on the desktop, instead of coming out the iPhone's speakers as they should. This really completely defeats the purpose of the proximity sensor, and makes the only viable option turning the headset off completely when it's not in use (so you lose the proximity-based answering feature as well).

I hope Plantronics may address these shortcomings in the future, or perhaps another manufacturer may implement a sensing feature. I will truly miss the parts of this headset that worked well, but I can't risk damaging my hearing with the blasting treble, and I'm tired of missing text alerts on my phone because the audio is not routed properly.

5Finally found the perfect case!
By Daniel Pena
Just got my case about an hour ago. I gotta say I'm VERY impressed. I've had so many cases for my iPhone 5 including Speck Candyshell, Pixelskin HD, Incipio Frequency, Magpul Field Case, Belkin Grip Candy Sheer, Switcheasy Tones, Spigen Slim Armor, Neo Hybrid EX Slim and many other cheap cases from Amazon. This is THE BEST CASE out of all of them. Obviously, in terms of protection, there are better cases out there, but for my needs (scratches and occasional drops here and there), it's perfect! Here is a quick pro-con list:

PROS
1. VERY Slim (slimmer than Belkin Grip candy sheer and Switcheasy Tones). It is the exact same thickness as the Neo Hybrid EX Slim (Except that this covers your whole back).
2. Tight fit (NO movement whatsoever). On most TPU cases you can pull the sides a little bit, but the plastic bumper on the Neo Hybrid prevents the TPU from stretching away from the phone.
3. Buttons are extremely responsive.
4. Individual cutouts on the bottom along with grille for the speaker/mic.
5. Lay on the table design.
6. Works with glass screen protectors(I don't use them but for those of you who do, it works).
7. Matte TPU feels amazing and gives good grip.
8. No over-sized camera cutout that leaves the aluminum back exposed.
9. LOOKS BAD-ASS!!!

CONS:
1. Headphone port might be a bit too small for over-sized headphone plugs.
2. A tiny bit more lay on the table design would have been appreciated, but not a big deal.

Summary:
I wish Spigen would have released this case when the iPhone 5 came out so that I could have saved a lot of $$$ on those other cases!

5BEST IPHONE 5 CASE OUT THERE...BUT BEWARE...
By TheR3alDanny
I have spent over $60 trying different cases(about 7 total) and finally came across this $22 Spigen Neo case. At first, I was held back by the price as I normally don't spend over $20 for a case. I usually buy Amazon Warehouse deals but went ahead and dished out the $20. My goal is to write good reviews while protecting my iPhone with only the best out there. Well, I have FINALLY found it! This Neo case is the king of cases! It adds protection, no bulk, and my favorite feature....Tactile buttons! The metal slate is really cool. Some users complain about the headphone jack and yea its a little small but I use Sennheiser HD 219's with no problem. DJ style headphones should work fine.

But, beware during install: The "bumper" that goes over the TPU portion is very delicate. This is definitely a case you don't want to remove/install too many times. Inside it has very little "clips" that snap on to the TPU, on mine, I ALREADY broke half of two of the ridges. It still holds, but I won't be removing it anytime soon unless I really have too. I'm afraid i'll finish breaking them. Read the instructions before installing. I really hope Spigen warranties this part cause it too delicate for such a pricey case.

Another cool thing about this case is it has a small lip that doesn't touch the screen protector. You should have no problem having different size thickness screen protectors. I currently have a Skinomi protector on the front and nothing on the back with no problem.

Out of all the cases I've tried, I give this 9.5 out of 10. My only "con" is the price which does not compensate thin, flimsy clips that hold the case to the TPU. The outer bumper is VERY slim but its still a bada$$ phone case. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

The home button add-ons are okay. I personally dont like them as they tend to press while in my pocket. Mainly because the lip is very small so the home button add-on sticks out.

**9/17/13 UPDATE**
Still love the case but noticed something buyers should be aware of. The outer shell/bumper feels like it'll break if you squeeze it too hard. Another thing, I took this case apart to show my coworker what the inside looked like and the power button broke off. Luckily I was able to pop it back into place. I hope SPIGEN will sell the bumper/shells individually as I feel these will break if frequently removed/installed(I sent them a email about this and will update if they respond).

**10/04/13 UPDATE**
I received my replacement case on Monday after sending the broken one in last week. I couldn't be happier with Spigen's customer service. All emails were answered and the replacement arrived super fast. Check out my other case reviews and pictures on Spigen products.

5Sweet Dual Layer Bumper Design
By japmonster
This thing is sweet.
I like the 2 piece design.
The black tpu layer has a nice matte finish and feels nice when you hold it.
The buttons are great, its like your not using a case as far as clicks go.
Easy to get to the vibrate toggle switch.
This thing keeps your phone at a nice thin profile. It doesn't add much bulk at all to your phone, but i think it'll help just enough if you drop your phone. Its not a super tough case but I'd put it in the lighter duty class.

Overall I like the case and have no regrets ordering it.
If you want a slim case that will give you some drop protection, this thing is nice.

By Nancy K.
I ordered this case for my iphone 5s and the mint green is now a yellow/brownish green, which can't be removed with anything. This case looks like it was purchased at the dollar store and I've already ordered a different one to replace it. The quality is terrible.

My wife has had this case for less than 1 month, the plastic they use can't be cleaned. We tried soap & water, magic eraser... I have the black one and it's fine but skip the colored ones they'll look like crap inside a month.

3Great lenth, thats about it.
By terry
I can't rate this product by all of them, only the one I relieved. I bought this for my office and it does not charge as efficiently as the only that came with my phone. The stock cable charges fast and easy no matter if I am using my phone or not. This one however, charges slow and if I am doing something on my phone as it charges it will sit at the same charge percentage until I stop using it. I have seen it sit at 46% for well over thirty minutes.

4ridiculous price but a great case
By Miss Print
Let's start by talking about the elephant in the room: This phone case is forty dollars. That is insane. While this case has a lovely graphic (I have the galaxy one) you are paying a good ten dollars more for the privilege of having a cute graphic on your phone with the Speck case.

That said, if you have the coin, this is a great case.

I've always liked the feel of the Speck CandShell cases--they add a nice heft to the phone without a rubberized feel and they don't add a lot of bulk or weight. I feel like my phone is protected but I'm not super bogged down. This case has a nice purple rubber border. I haven't experienced any pilling or dye transfer yet but both have been problems with previous Speck cases when they are in my jeans pockets.

The graphic is gorgeous. It's printed directly on the plastic in some way so the case doesn't have any decals or stickers that will peel or chip. Scratches might be possible after a bad drop but I'm not even sure those would do much damage. Even the Speck name and logo on the back are unobtrusive.

The first day I used this case, my phone fell out of my hands and bounced onto a hardwood floor. But my phone was fine after! So the case works great and it looks great. It's just very, very expensive.

4Great graphics, but makes the phone feel bulky
By Julie Kostina
I just received my CandyShell Inked case today after waiting for it to ship for a while when it was on backorder. The graphics are really gorgeous and the case seems very sturdy and durable. I think the graphics will hold up.

However, it does make the phone feel awfully bulky. I understand that it's shock-proof and provides good protection, so I'll keep it, but I probably won't use it every day. The last Speck case I had was the PixelSkin and it was so much thinner and lighter (and also provided great protection for my phone). If you're looking for a low-profile case, you should probably keep looking.

5Very protective case for the price of most other high-quality cases...
By CCE
I carry my phone everywhere. I drop my phone. My toddler plays with and drops my phone. I put my phone in my pocket with all manner of things from tissues and napkins to coins. I'm constantly seeking the right case that balances protection with bulk.

This case achieves a great balance! (iPhone 5s) Overall, it's the best case I've had in ages.

First, yes, it's not cheap, but I've spent that same amount on other, name-brand cases and not received nearly as nice or as effective a product.

- Plastic shell with tight rubbery lining - dust and lint actually stay out
- The "points" of the corners (where the phone would hit the ground) have little slices cut out of the plastic so, when dropped, the impact will be dispersed across the softer lining
- The rubbery lining material also forms a tight bezel around the front of the phone, so if you drop the phone face-down, the bezel will take the impact
- The ports are readily available (not blocked or covered) and fit standard rounded cables (I have one lightning cable with a square plastic plug housing instead of an oval one - it doesn't work with this case)
- The buttons are stiff, but easy to get used to
- The mute slider (that slider above the volume buttons) is open rather than under the case (I prefer this)
- The candy shell slides in and out of my pocket easily
- Doesn't add too much bulk or weight to the phone (for me - the previous front-runner for protective cases was the OtterBox Defender)
- I love the graphics on the purple one I got and it doesn't look like every other iPhone on the table
- ETA: I've been using it non-stop for 2 weeks and the rubbery bits aren't discoloring or showing dirt!

This case doesn't offer moisture protection or a screen cover. Moisture protection would have required more bulk but a screen cover would have been nice.

5awesome design and functionality for iphone 5c
By cjpk11
Spigen is such a quality company for iphone accessories. This case for the iphone 5c is high quality, lite in weight and sturdy in build. A great combo. It costs more than a ten buck case or a clearance item from griffin, belkin, or any of the other popular case companies but you get what you pay for. I have tried and returned 3 other cases from well known, high quality companies that turned out to be sub par or disappointing for this phone I have had for only 2 weeks! This sSpigen case is the one I am sticking with (that and the one Apple made as a back up option) The phone slips in the case very easily if you start working it in at the top where the buttons are and it fits nice and tight once all the way in at the bottom (you put the phone in the case whole according to the Spigen website even though the case has 2 parts/layers).
The metal slate color I chose is a nice midnight blue color just as it looked online. Its all made of plastic but like the iphone 5c it is unapologeticlly plastic lol...good strong feel but lite in weight. The ridges around the screen do not interfere with the Spigen Clear screen protector on my phone (see my other ereview of this dry application screen protector...five stars)and raises the screen enough off of flat surfaces to lay down ok without fear of scratching. Also the lip around the back camera and flash is also quite substantial and protects the camera and flash from contact with a surface the phone is placed on. All in all a well rounded case that does not add a lot of bulk to the phone but keeps it nice and safe. Great buy worth the 24.99 --- which is a less expensive price than going to the Spigen website directly!

5Unapologetically Rugged and Sleek!
By Patrick
Instead of going over to the popular Otterbox for my first iPhone ever, I did some research and found Spigen. The constant five-star review and the aesthetic beauty of the case instantly hooked me in.
I wanted this case right away! So I ordered it in white!

The case was delivered to me on schedule in a nice grey packaging from Amazon. I took the packaging off and was greeted by - not only a very well done packaging by Spigen but also - an incredible presentation of the case itself. I got right to taking off the packaging to get to the case and once I got it out, I cleaned my iPhone 5C and put it in the case.

Right away, I was completely mesmerized by how perfectly it fit! It's been two weeks and I haven't stopped admiring this case! I love it so much! So much in fact that I had to come back and submit photos and write reviews about this beautiful case. It deserves every 5-star rating that it got.

Everything about the case is incredible. From holding it, you know they paid very close attention to the phone and to the needs of the user. From the style of it to the functionality, everything is perfect:
-The bezel on the perimeter creates an image of a deceptively thin case when you hold it at certain angles
-The bezel also makes it pleasing to hold the case
-The fact that it is made of two materials but always remains as one is incredible
-The buttons are enticing and just make you want to press them all day
-The screen protection from the case's lips is not too thin nor tall
-The case fits on the phone as if it were an extra small-sized latex glove on the hands of a giant. Which is to say it FITS PRETTY DAMN WELL

My only wish (but really it's just personal preference) is that Spigen had made the little circle cut-out for the Apple logo, but other than that, this case is perhaps the best for the job!

TL;DR Don't get this case because you will regret how much you will fall in love with it.

5Good solid case - Vibrant Color
By SubSurfCPO
I love this case! It fits the iPhone 5C perfectly, the buttons are usable, connection points easy to acces. It is a good case at a decent price. I compared this case to many others and decided on it for the following reasons:

- a more expensive case is available (Otterbox), but there are many similarities in construction. It depends on the level of protection you want and need. If you need something water-proof, dust-proof, shock resistant from 100 feet - find another case
- no bad reviews on delivery. a highly rated case on Amazon had a terrible track record for delivery and customer service
- everything else is new too. The 5C is new, so are all of the cases flooding the market.
- it needed to fit in pocket and not be to cumbersome. it's not, it keeps the small size and shape and is not bulky (Otterbox).

You will need to add a screen protector, but again it depends on what you need.

1Cord is very short and doesn't charge
By Amazon Customer
Don't even waste your time if you are looking for a charger that works. This product is fake and stopped working after two days. The cord length is very short and in the picture they make it look like it's long. [My previous review was deleted. Delete this and I would leave another one]

1VERY SHORT CORD
By Sierrawine
I cannot say if it even charges or not because it wouldn't reach from my desk at work to the floor where the outlets are. I never would have thought someone would sell a charger that is less than three feet long! (I measured it around 2'8") I ordered two - bummer. Now I have to buy two usb cords to switch out and I'll have two SHORT USB cables laying around. I guess I can use those for my computer but the cost of my extra chargers just went way up!

Since it said "Genuine Samsung product" I assumed it would be exactly like (or extremely similar!) to the one that came with my phone. This one doesn't work on my desk at work and wouldn't work on my nightstand, either.

Edit July 2013: I do actually use these - they work well on my kitchen countertops for not having a long cord hanging around. They charge well - I've had no problem with that at all. I still give them a low rating for not saying they were short and implying they were the same as the original that came with the phone.

4Good case. Connector port very tight.
By Kevin Lepard
I purchased this case directly from Lifeproof when I got my iPhone 4S in October of 2011. I installed my iPhone directly into the case and have used it daily since then.

This case is indeed very slim for the level of protection provided. The screen protector does not appear to impair the usefulness of the touchscreen. The phone is entirely encased when installed.

The claims made on the site appear to be true, so I won't repeat them here.

There are two cons, however. First, accessing the headphone jack is very inconvenient. You have to unscrew a plug, that can then easily be lost. This also limits the types of plugs that will mate with the headphone jack.

Second, and more annoying is that the port through which you have to plug a iPod cable to charge or sync is VERY tight. If you have any third party cable that is even a tiny bit bigger than Apple's, it won't fit. You'll either need the suggested RadTech passthrough connector or an original Apple cable. If you only use OEM cables, this won't bother you, but otherwise it's quite annoying.

I would have preferred to see an integrated pass-through 20-pin connector built into the case, so you had more flexibility in selecting connecting cables.

Overall, this is a very nice case and provides a very high level of protection. I would purchase it again. I deducted one star for the two cons noted above.

1Counterfeit
By BJJ
My grandson dropped this and the case broke after 2 weeks. He called Lifeproof and found out this is a counterfeit and can not be replaced. I paid $50 for this through Amazon and thought I could trust that Amazon would not sell counterfeit items. I have ordered so much from Amazon over the years and this is the first time this has happened to me.
Life proof said to only buy their products from Target or Best Buy.

Wish I could give zero stars. Wish I could get my money back. Learn from my mistake and do not purchase LifeProof through Amazon. I will go to Best Buy and purchase another real LifeProof case that is not counterfeit.

UPDATE 1/15/2013
I contacted Amazon and spoke to a most helpful customer Service employee. I explained that my grandson had contacted a LIFEPROOF representative and was told this was a fake as serial numbers were incorrect and learned that the company does not sell their cases on Amazon. Told Amazon's rep that I did not want them to mail another, but I needed reimbursement so I could go to Best Buy or Target where the real LifeProof company sells the real cases. I was forwarded an address lable right then and my grandson UPSed the case back to Aamazon that afternoon. 3 days later Amazon credited the dollar amount back to my charge card. My grandson bought the real case from Best Buy and is very happy. I am happy with Amazon once again. Amazon always stands behind thier reputation as being very reliable and they are very helpful.

I'm a very happy customer once again. Thanks Amazon!

5Case is awesome, despite some valid concerns...
By Karl
Ok. So I read the reviews on Amazon about this case. And despite the concerns, I can assure you this case is EXCELLENT! In fact, my initial reaction to the case was negative. So here we go...

When I opened the box, I was initially disappointed to see two flimsy case pieces that snap together with no instructions! I thought this was a joke. $80 for this? It refers you to a web site where you have to watch a few videos. So, I gave it a shot. The videos are short and helpful. The first video suggests you do a waterproof test on your case for a full hour! I tested mine for about a half hour and I think that is even overkill.

Now the fun begins. You can put your iPhone in the case. This process was very simple. After the case is on, now you feel the full effect of awesome protection. Some reviews said the there was a gap between the front of the plastic portion of the case and the iphone, causing air pockets. That did not occur for me. It was an absolute perfect seal. I actually did this twice, once for my girlfriend, and on mine with no trouble. All the buttons work perfectly.

Now on to usability complaints. Some users complained about significant problems either hearing or speaking into the phone. I will admit the noise level is dampened "slightly." With the phone turned all the way up, the ringtone is still significantly loud. It's not really an issue. But this actually happened to me. My girlfriend's case casued NO sound issues. When I got mine, it was significantly dampened compared to hers. I remember the Best Buy saleswoman told me when I bought my case that it is hardly returned and that one time it caused a muffled sound issue, but they swapped it out with a new one and the problem was resolved. Well... that's what I did. And my second case was perfect. So if this is your issue, try another one. It worked for me.

On to the headphone issue and listening to music, etc. There is an adapter that plugs into the case/iphone and then you plug your headphones into that. I NEVER USED IT! I plugged my iPod earbuds directly into the iPhone and it worked beautifully. Forget the adapter. You only need it so that it completes a waterproof seal. I suppose you need it for extreme conditions, maybe you're skiing for example. The sound was fantastic without the adapter. This is a non issue.

I've had my case for over two weeks now and already I had a mishap. It was on the table while I was eating lunch, and I got a drop of italian oil from my sub directly on the front of the case. No trouble! Wiped it right off. The case is completely water proof!

I bought the belt buckle for the case. I will admit it's a bit unweildy, but not horribly so. It's a bit of a pain to take on and off. Most people may prefer simply keeping it in their pocket (oh the case doesn't add much bulk at all), or in their bag/purse.

If you want to do some research before buying, go to this link on the lifeproof website and watch the videos.

[...]

I HIGHLY recommend this case. It performs as advertised.

5Great for the essentials!
By John B.
I took a chance on this case- I had an Otterbox Defender for my iPhone 5 which I loved but I was intrigued by the idea of not having to carry a wallet for the essentials (driver license, credit card, debit card, and some Cash).

I can fit 3 cards in this case plus two folded bills of Cash. My "go to" card is always on top (it's the easiest to get out) and the case does exactly what I want it to do- carries the essentials so I grab my phone and go. It also protects my phone (it's the Commuter series, so it's not quite as rugged as the Defender but overall it's about the same size which isn't bad at all).

The cards inside are very secure and the case is designed so it's impossible for your stuff to fall out. My one complaint was that the screen protector it came with had stickers on it that didn't peel off cleanly and made it pretty much worthless so I don't use it- but I'm so satisfied with the case that it doesn't affect me giving it 5 stars.

3More Trouble Than It Should Be
By Rex Kullmann
I like the idea of a wallet case for my iPhone and doing away with my wallet. The fewer things to carry, the better. But wallet cases are very limited. The idea is that they are cases for occasional use, such as when you are going out for the night and only want to carry an ID and credit card. This wallet case can only carry three cards or two cards and three folded bills.

Otterbox Commuter cases are two piece cases that have a silicone layer covered by a hard shell. They aren’t my favorite because the hardshell doesn’t quite fit right leaving tiny gaps. Two piece cases take more effort to get on and off which is more of a problem on a case made for occasional use. The black on black color scheme turns the handsome iPhone into an all-black design-free box.

Otter likes to put rubber plugs over the jack openings which offers extra protection, but is a pain when you want to charge or plug in headphones. The volume button covers work well, but the on/standby button cover make it stiff and lacking in tactile feel. Otter provides a clear screen protector and applicator card.

Cards fit in the wallet case by sliding down the back panel revealing the compartment. The slide is stiff and there is no grip for your finger to press against. You have to press against smooth sloping plastic. When you get the slide open, you have to dig you finger nail under the top card so you can pry it up and out.

This wallet case is too much trouble for me. But if it fits your needs, this case should offer good protection and durability. Two and a half stars.

5The geek equivalent of the double-edged sword
By Steve Ruskin
This is another well made case from Otterbox. I've had Otterbox cases for my iPhones and iPads and they've always performed well. They aren't stylish, but they protect your device. I've used them for travel mostly, and have never been disappointed.

This "Wallet Case" checks all the usual Otterbox, um, boxes: Protective? Check. Grippy? Check. 80's Volvo-like Styling? Check. Yep, it's an Otterbox all right.

But one with a twist. Because this case resolves that nagging dilemma we all have: how do I carry my iPhone AND my credit and ID cards in one place?

Dilemma resolved. This case is that place.

Otterbox added a sliding tray on the back of one of their tough cases. From the front and back and the added "bump" isn't noticeable. In profile however or in the palm of your hand it's there alright. Think of the top of a 747 and you'll get the idea. A little curvature on an otherwise continuous line.

In that bump of a tray you can fit a pair of credit cards and your driver's license. Great for the minimalist traveler or a night out clubbing. That is if you go to hipster clubs where geeky dual-purpose cases are cool.

I don't go to clubs like that. I don't go to clubs. But if I did, this is the case I would take.

Go ahead and drop it while dancing crazily to the DJ's Devo dub: both your iPhone and credit cards will be just fine.

Just don't lose it. Then you'll never be able to call that girl in the Warby Parker frames who put her number into your phone. Plus you'll have no way to pay for the cab ride home. Double bummer, dude.

So there you go. The "OtterBox Commuter Series Wallet Case for iPhone 5 & 5S"--the geek equivalent of the double-edged sword.

5Dont listen to the poor reviews!!
By Eugenia Bone
So I have wanted one of these for a while now and went on and read a LOT of the reviews here on Amazon. To be honest some of the poor reviews had me a little worried! But I am leaving this review to ASSURE you that nearly ALL of the negative reviews were definitely coming from operator errors (if you get my drift) and people who didnt have ANY idea what they were buying...

Clearly the Defender series is going to be a little beefy. Which I would HOPE is why your looking at this sort of case! For a big-bad iphone defending case! and that is JUST what you get! So the reviews on size I feel are unfair, based on the fact that you should have known its a sturdier case. (I find this NO problem for the protection it provides. Being a girl, I couldnt fit an iphone in my pants pocket to begin with, so its not an issue...And I would like to stress its not THAT big.

Some people (a good number) have complained about a hole on the top being for the headphones being on the wrong side...This is NOT the case people! You must open the flap to use your headphones...The hole is for the MICROPHONE! So do not fret. There is NO issue there...just people simply misunderstanding the product.

I read multiple reviews where people complained about being able to charge or undo the bottom flap, etc. Ok. It is silicone people. soft, flexible silicone...So NO you DONT need to completely take apart the cover to charge your phone. You simply lift that flap and plug in your phone. There is NO issue with it closing, because its not supposed to be closed OR completely open while charging...Again, silicone does not hinge... In fact, I am charging my right now with zero issue. All the flaps are really easy to open and close and I see no issue with them being flimsy, or too firm either.

I saw one or two people say they thought it decreased the sensitivity of the screen. I have not had that problem. As long as you get the right model and it fits well there is no reason for it to have any effect, it is just a regular old screen guard just like any other you'd buy on the market and shouldnt (and wont) effect the use of your screen. The people who complained that it messed up the lightness of the screen may have had it set to auto, and I know mine sometimes in certain light decides to stick with a darker back light setting than I would prefer. So once again, I am sure this is something that one could adjust in the settings of your phone, and not be a problem with the case.

So in conclusion, this is an AWESOME product. If you are looking for a really tough case, that looks great and you UNDERSTAND that a thin, one sided, snap on case will not be very tough...then this is for you! Please note that a LOT of the negative reviews come from people's misuse or misunderstanding of the product. NOT the product itself. I cant say how happy I am with this product and I am SO glad I went ahead regardless of those negative reviews.

5Works great with a verizon iphone 4! UPDATED, AND NOW 4S!
By J.F.
Seems that some AT&T stores have stocked these on their shelves a little earlier than most stores, so I grabbed one and put it on my iphone 4 right away. (Verizon iPhone 4, not 4S)

As far as form and fit goes, it's really similar to the current iphone 4 defender series, the major differences are the cut outs for the front and the back. Also to make note, these cases work on ALL models of the iPhone, whether you have a sprint, verizon, or AT&T model, they'll all work.

Otterbox's old defender series didnt properly work with the white iphone 4 due to the location change of the proximity sensor. People would be dialing with their cheek, ear, face, etc because the screen wouldnt shut off. Now with the larger cut out, otterbox has fixed this issue and made the case truly work with all models of the iphone 4/4S, both white and black.

Otterbox has also changed the rear camera opening to be one huge opening. This is because of some complaints of the flash reflecting off the old case and washing out photos. It's also because the camera is slightly different on the 4S, which requires the huge opening we're starting to see on every case available.

The colors are a lot better, they match, they're catchier. They've still left the back cut out which shows the apple logo. I find this cut out really useless and unnecessary, but it's nice they also add the same clear protective film that's used on the screen protector.

The built in screen protector feels the same, still gets finger prints and dust on it, but a quick and easy wipe with a cloth or shirt cleans it off.

If you have a white iphone, or are getting the new 4S on october 14th, this is the case for you! It'll protect your phone from everyday drops, accidents, and bumps. This case is a tank and definitely worth the money. Though it is a steep fifty dollars compared to the price of the "old" defender series currently, it's still worth the extra money.

EDIT: I just got my 4S in the mail a few hours ago and let it fully charge up before using. After it was done, I put the old otterbox defender on the 4S and it works fine with the black model, but not my sister's white model. The proximity sensor on the black does turn on and off just fine. The issue is though, the camera looks blurry and washed out with the case on. This truly is why otterbox made the huge opening on the new 4S cases. So get one of the new defenders ASAP, otherwise your pictures will look like crap.

UPDATE 10/25/2011:

I've been using this new case on the 4S for a while now, enough to have a solid review based off real world use. It's a great case, and I still stand by my original first hand review. One thing I noticed on the old defender was that dust would get in from somewhere, and then sneak under screen protector and look horrible when the screen was off. I haven't noticed any dust on the new 4S case underneath the screen. I dropped my phone when handing it to a friend, and it held up. It fell about 3-4 feet in the air, and it looks unharmed, so I'm glad I really have the 4S defender on my iphone, otherwise who knows, I might be stuck with broken glass on my screen.

The colors are a bit different in real life, than what Otterbox shows on their website, and here on amazon, but they're still beautiful and good looking.

Again, I recommend this case!

4Nice upgrade from the original iPhone 4 Defender case
By K. Myers
I used the original Otterbox Defender case for my iPhone 4s, and while it worked ok, this version is a definite improvement. The hard plastic case and the screen protector seem to be the same as the original, other than having larger cut outs for the camera/flash and the front camera/light sensor/proximity sensor area. I never had issues using the 4s camera with the older version case, but I did with the proximity sensor and this case fixes that issue.

The holster has been changed to update the release mechanism. The tab that holds the phone in the holster has been shaped differently in order to make the phone easier to clip in and release.

The biggest upgrade is to the rubber jacket that fits over the plastic case. The rubber seems to be of much higher quality. It has a firmer, more substantial feel, and doesn't seem like it will lose shape over time. It gives the case a better grip in your hand and generally feels more solid overall.

The opening for the silent mode switch seems to still be off center, but not enough to be of concern.

If you are on the fence about whether to get the older iPhone 4 Otterbox Defender for your 4S or this updated version, I'd definitely pay the extra $10 or so and get the new version.
