Combo pack that makes sense - a good value for OEM ink

I've taken issue with Canon ink cartridges for the fact that over time the capacities have shrunk dramatically. For example, older tanks like the Canon CLI-8 were 13ml capacity, the later gen Canon CLI-221 shrunk to 9ml, and the most recent Canon CLI-251 shrunk even further to 7ml. Note that this isn't just a Canon issue; the incredible shrinking ink cartridge has affected HP and Epson as well, perhaps even more so than Canon.

So I appreciate the fact that Canon kept the capacity of these new CLI-42 tanks at 13ml. This makes them a reasonable value - even if these cartridges cost somewhat more than the newer tanks mentioned above, the cost per ml is much less. And by using OEM ink, you'll get the best results and least headaches printing on Canon printers like the Canon PIXMA Pro-100 Color Professional Inkjet Photo Printer.

Another plus for the CLI-42 is that these tank are clear, allowing you to eyeball the remaining ink levels. Most other current Canon ink tanks are opaque; with these you must rely on the printer to tell you when to replace the ink, and occasionally printers get it wrong and tell you a tank is empty when it isn't.

As for the combo sold here, it contains all of the inks required to use the Pro-100, without missing ink tanks or unneeded throw-ins like a few sheets of 4x6 paper. And it saves you about $10 over the cost of buying the tanks individually.

First off..HP is pretty smart to force you to buy color cartridges, even if you only want to print a word document in black and white. Not only that, but when you do print a word document with black font color, it still uses the color cartridges! I guess they need to make money some how, but come on..really?

But as for the product, these are "genuine HP cartridges" (at least my printer says so) so it works. I just hate HP for forcing us to buy this when you don't want to even use the color.

EDIT: Okay, here is warning to everyone that ever buys an HP InkJet printer.

With everything that I wrote about in mind, it is inevitable (if you want to print anything) for the need to buy new cartridges. Or you could go get them refilled, which is much cheaper. I did this at Costco. It cost about $25 after tax to refill the 3 colors. Now here is another dirty, dirty trick from HP. You need spare cartridges to "trick" your InkJet before installing the refills. Apparently, the printer remembers that the empty ones are depleted so you can't just get those refilled and replace it. You need to obtain another set of cartridges to 'reset' the printer THEN put the refills in. Once again, HP has found a way to make simple things so frustrating and annoying. I will never buy a HP printer again. Ever.

You want to complain about price, you get what you pay for. For $25 I am very happy with this product. Mine is plastic, no it doesn't have a quality feel, but the sound is awesome for such small device. I'm thinking about buying a splitter and adding another speaker. I am thoroughly happy and WILL be recommending this to family and friends.I am currently sitting at the Virgin Islands and can CLEARLY hear the bass and treble OVER the loud waves and people while sitting on the beach (:

Great Quality + Fast Color Printing, but a "Toner Hog"

The Brother HL4570cdw is a fantastic printer for everyday and office use. This is my first Brother purchase. I'm using it to print out full colored brochures (graphics, photos, and text). So far it's been more than adequate when using the appropriate paper i.e. glossy paper. When on regular paper, the colors are not as sharp and pictures are not as clear. For photos, the resolution quality is acceptable/good, but there is a noticeable difference in quality from a print shop and a heavy duty office printer (you know the 5 foot jumbo printers).

As for print speeds, from start to finish it prints at an above average pace. The spooling process is quick (less than 2 minutes) for a 80 mb print job. It printed a 60 page, full color (vivid mode), double sided booklet in about 8-10 minutes.

PROS
- Easy printer and wireless Setup (less than 5 minutes).
- Good print speeds (auto-duplex and straight printing).
- Excellent print quality for general graphics and text.
- Good photo quality when using the right paper.
- Acceptable noise level for a printer
- Toner replacements are cheaper than HPs, Lexmark, and Canon.

CONS
- Printer reads toner as empty when full. You must do the toner trick which involves covering the clear holes with black electric tape on the toner cartridges as a temporary solution. For a more permanent solution, you need to reset the computerized toner levels on the printer. You do this by 1) Opening the printer door 2) Holding Back and Cancel at the same time 3) A menu to reset the toners pops up 4) You hit Okay to reset.
- I printed approximately 900 full color pages with the "starter" cartridges it came and some cartridges are already visibly running low. While the prints were on the high color (vivid) settings, it is a shame that this printer appears to be another "toner hog" and did not print to the 3000/1500 page estimates the cartridges claim.
- Photo prints are poor when printing full sized photos on regular paper. For best printing results you need to use specialized glossy paper.
- Must use "multi-purpose" pullout feeder tray for specialized paper or else risk paper jams
- Very slight paper curl
- Noise level maybe too loud for a quiet office space.

I compared the Brother HL-4570cdw's print quality extensively with HPs and Canon color lasers in this price range, and the Brother printed out more impressive looking demo prints than its competitors. The print quality is enough to merit the purchase of this printer and because the toner replacements are relatively cheaper than other companies the Brother HL-4570cdw receives my recommendation.

Overall, I'm happy with this purchase and would recommend it if you get it for the right price. I would not pay more than $400-$425 for this machine which is the price I paid.

Best mid-range laser printer with curling paper problem

I hope the one message I can get out to everyone is that printers are one of the most undependable machines that anyone can look to purchase. I run a home business and I made the mistake of spending well over $1k a few years back for a Konica Minolta 5430DL. It was a beauty of a printer, but shortly after spending nearly $600 in replacement cartridges the printer started falling apart.

What I learned is that even the priciest printers break. This is more of a disposable technology than something you can hand down to your kids. When all the printer companies play the game of selling printers with limited ink cartridges and then charging you more than the printer itself for refills, you know that the only way to come out ahead is to buy the best bang-for-the-buck printer with the expectation that it's only going to last a few short years.

I believe the Brother HL4570 is that kind of printer.

For $400 I knew I was buying something mid-range. It would certainly be a step down from the $1k Konica Minolta but at least the value of the printer is close to the value of replacing cartridges. This means when I finally deplete the cartridges I have the choice of buying more cartridges or another printer -- whichever costs less.

I chose Brother because I wanted a wireless printer that played well with Mac. If read on counteless discussion forums that more than any other brand, the Brother is the easiest to install with a Macintosh computer.

Those discussion forums were correct. The wireless setup with my iMac took less than 10 minutes to complete.

...but I am getting ahead of myself.

Bought this printer when it dropped in price to $399 from $450. Had it shipped Amazon Prime 2-day and Fedex delivered it overnight. It's rather heavy, weighing in at about 65 lbs. The unit is well packaged. Be sure to read the quick-start manual for important unpacking instructions. There are a lot of doors and drawers that you need to access and remove small pieces of packaging.

Once unpacked and plugged in, the first step was to pair the printer to my WiFi. A small LCD display lets you navigate through a setup wizard that automatically detects your WiFi network. The next step is simply inputint the password which is a bit of a cumbersome process as you have to wade through rows of characters till you get to the numbers and letters you need. Frankly, that part of the setup seems very old-school. Brother could have really improved upon this process. Be aware that as you enter each number and letter of your password that character quickly turns to an asterick to hide it. Don't be confused by what the printer is doing.]

Once the password was entered the printer immediately paired to my network. No hiccups whatsoever.

The next step was even simpler. I put the install disc in my iMac, run it, and it automatically installs the drivers and detects my printer. Never have I ever been able to pair a printer to my Mac or PC this easily. It really is true -- this printer is Mac's best friend.

I decided to do a test page which is done simply by pressing the GO button on the printer. It didn't take long for the printer to whiz into motion and produce a page.

Two immediate problems: First, my room stunk of toner. This thing put out a stench that I could not believe. I had read another review from someone complaining about the smell this priter produces. Fortunately, it seems, the stench was only present at the initial print. I am hoping that the printer is just breaking itself in. I will keep you posted on future prints.

The second problem is page curling. Pages come out curled. I am using 30 weight paper which should be less prone to curling. I understand there are adjustments you can make in the computer to lessen the curl. I will certainly look into this and keep you posted.

Print speed and quality is very good. Black text looks very crisp but colors are not true to original. I had read in another review that this Brother printer produces darker versions of the original color. This is true. Oranges were deeper, light blues became dark blues. Potentially, I don't see this as a major problem -- but some who are more finicky about their printer producing true colors will not be happy.

I won't even talk about photos. Haven't tested photo printing because I already know it will look like garbage. You don't use these printers for photos and anyone buying it for that use is foolish.

Is the printer loud? Somewhat, yes. But realize that I am coming from a monstrous Konica Minolta machine that was even louder than this Brother. So, for me, the printer is quieter than the more industrial sized machines I have been used to.

Thus far, I am very impressed with the ease of setup and immediate pairing to my WiFi network and iMac. I mean, I had this running in less than 15 minutes after full unpack.

As for overall quality? It is what I expect from a $400 laser printer. It's speedy with highly acceptable print quality. However, it's not on par with business class machines. It suffers from subdued color reproduction, colors are slightly darker than they should be and pages curl.

The machine awakens from sleep and produces a page in less than 10 seconds. This is great. My Konica Minolta would wake from sleep and go through a minute of two of machine "whirring" until it decided to spit out a page.

For $400 this doesn't seem to be a significant step down from my $1k Konica Minolta business class computer and that's why I am not complaining.

You can read through countless reviews on Amazon hoping to get the right printer. Every single one of them has a handful of bad reviews and complaints about breakage and toner cost. I found the Brother, particularly this model, to be the better rated printer in its price range. Certainly toner replacement will be a little cheaper than going with HP.

UPDATE

The stench I was experiencing with print jobs has lessened, though there is still the slightest odor of print toner whenever I run the printer. I am hoping this subsides with age.

Went into PRINT SETTINGS on my Mac and selected REDUCE PAGE CURLING. It did very little to curb the problem. This printer still produces curled prints and that's the only annoying issue I still have with this printer.

In all, the Brother 4570 is probably the best color laser printer in the $400 range. Certainly a better option than purchasing an HP which comes with limited-filled toner cartridges and (from reviews I have read on Amazon) its own set of headaches.

Great Color Laser But VERY Expensive Toner

I purchased this in November 2010 and have had for 5 months. I wanted to give it 3.5 stars, but Amazon doesn't allow half stars. While the purchase price was a VERY good value, the price of the replacement toner and insistence of the system to force you to replace the cartridge even when they clearly still contain ink is very frustrating.

PROS:
1. Reasonably priced for a wireless color laser
2. Excellent color documents
3. Relatively fast
4. Prints double-sided
5. Wi-Fi

CONS:
1. VERY expensive refills. I don't print that much and all 4 cartridges have run out in 5 months. The replacement cost for the 4 cartridges is $200. Because it's a relatively new model, it doesn't appear there are options other than to buy genuine Brother Products.
2. The printer just stops working when it deems that the toner cartridges need to be replaced. The documents I printed the day before looked great and so I can't believe all 3 color cartridges are fully depleted of toner, but Brother insists they must be replaced to get the printer to run again.
3. The pages curl up at the ends.
4. It won't print B&W or gray-scale in PowerPoint 2010 even when selecting that option (Brother told me to call Microsoft and have them re-write PowerPoint software to fix this problem, which a complete blow off of a customer).
5. It works great with a PC, but won't print color photos from a Mac (they come out B&W and won't size correctly).
6. A little noisy but not too bad (don't plan to have a phone conversation via a speaker phone or headset if you're sitting within 10 feet of the printer while it's printing)

UPDATE as of 11-July-2012:
I just ordered 4 new high-capacity ink cartridges (the TN-315 model) yesterday (for $85/each x 4 = $340), which is the second time I've ordered high capacity cartridges in the ~20 months I've had the printer. This is after using the regular-capacity cartridges that came with the printer when I purchased it in November 2010. I can't say exactly how much printing I do, but it feels like I'm filling the paper tray about every 4-6 weeks and so it's not a lot. At this pace, I'm spending ~$350 per year on ink.

After searching the web I found a work-around to the problem I mentioned above, which allows me to manually reset the ink cartridge counter so that it will continue using the cartridges until the ink actually runs out (the only downside is that I need to look to see when the ink stops printing a specific color and then replace the cartridge). Overall, I really like the printer and would give it 4 starts at this point.

Purchased this product a week ago. Install was simple and easy and worked wireless and USB just fine. Scan worked very well--quite fast either wireless or USB...HOWEVER...

A day or so later the communication between print and computer through new HP Officejet 6700 Premium e-All-in-One Wireless Color Photo Printer with Scanner, Copier and Fax network would stop and require computer reboot to re-enable. Obviously this was unacceptable so I called HP to get resolved. To date I have been on phone with them for over 12 hours! During their first attempt to repair they suggested an uninstall of printer and then reinstall. This process created a DLL error which they could not explain. I checked web and many other have had same issue after un-install of HP software. I fixed the problem by running CCLEANER and Glary Utilities which cleaned up all the left over mess that HP leaves after un-install.

To make matter worse the process rendered my other all-in-on printer HP 56000 useless. I went from a dependable 5600 and a less than ideal 6700 to not being able to print at all on either. The case was escalated to an "Case Manager" who spent more time telling me what they would not do than he did offering solution. He said the problem with my 5600 would not be supported because it was out of warranty--even though it worked fine before the new 6700 uninstall issue. Unbelievable!!

Next an "expert tech" call was scheduled where resolution was expected. Would you believe that there system was unable to connect to my computer and then their e-mail system was not allowing outbound emails to be sent so tech could not send work around link to connect. A tech company that can't sent emails!

The tech went through another two hours of trying to make their software work and finally gave up and offered an upgraded model to be sent to me because he did not think the HP 6700 drivers would work--that there is an issue. His only other solutions was for me to reformat my hard drive and reinstall operating system and all program. Can you believe a software company can not fix there own software without having a user reformat computer and start from scratch. That is the most unreasonable suggestion I have ever heard!

To recap, the printer works, the software is a problem and the company should really consider learning what customer satisfaction means. It is no wonder they are considering "remaking themselves" and exiting the hardware space. They are failing in this area big time.

COLOR INK HOG even when printing B/W

I regret buying this machine. This printer is expensive to operate because it uses color ink to print black and white even when black ink cartridge is full. It will not print black and white if a color cartridge is empty even though it has black ink. Manual says it will print slower if a color cartridge is empty, but it will not print at all. Research this printer carefully before you buy.

One ink runs out and you can't print anything

Today I ran out of yellow ink in this printer. I discovered, after liking this printer so well, that I could not print a fast draft black ink page until I installed a new yellow ink cartridge. Seriously. So I had to drive 7 miles to the store, buy yellow ink, install the yellow ink cartridge, in order to print one black and white text page. This is not a good thing.

Excellent All-Around MFP

First, a response: while the very cynical 1-star review is correct about there being a paper-size limitation in tray/cassette 2, the choices are A3, A3+, US B (11x17), Letter, Legal, and A4! I think practically everyone will use at least one of those paper sizes with this printer, and they can be put there. Tray/cassette 1 of course supports the full complement of paper sizes, from 3.5x5 to 13x19. It's not immediately clear why there is such a limitation (possibly due to the longer paper path from the bottom?) but it exists in both the most recent firmware (setting paper size from the control panel) and the printer driver.
The print, scan, copy, and fax quality are all excellent, and the connectivity options are superb: WiFi-n, Ethernet, USB, USB Mass Storage, SD/xD/MS/CF, PictBridge, AirPrint, Epson ePrint, Google Cloud Print, IPP, Bonjour, SNMP, WSD, LLMNR, SLP, etc, etc. Leave room all around for the paper jam pull-outs and paper tray.
Mac users have an easy time, just install the printer and scanner drivers, and install the printer in System Preferences. The scanner will appear automatically in Image Capture. Windows users can easily install using SNMP by creating a port with the device name, then running the driver installer and selecting the port manually. Windows scanning requires running the setup program as an Administrator first, then the scannning program, then running both again as a regular user.
I've stayed away from the Event Monitor, and Download Navigator, but if you like complete customization of network devices, I strongly recommend EpsonNet Config (v3.7.0+), which is barely mentioned in the literature. Not only can you change the device name from the horrible serial number, but you can customize just about every setting (all kinds of stuff not available at the panel) such as Location, disabling unused network protocols, administrator password, timeout lengths, resource names, and you can type in your WiFi network password instead of doing it on the panel. Don't look for these settings on the printer's web server, it's very limited.
Just about the only gripe is the LCD quality which, being that it's a workgroup printer, is far behind the Artisan series' touchscreen, but I'd rather that money went into the build quality anyway.

Epson Omits Mentioning Certain Vital Limitations

While this appears to be a quality product for a very reasonable price, Epson's specifications skillfully leave out any mention of certain limitations. Two reasons we "invested" in this printer were the ability to print on tabloid-sized paper, and the automatic duplexing feature -- we do 4-page 11x17 newsletters. We very soon discovered that automatic duplexing works ONLY with letter size and A4 paper, and no other sizes. Duplexing on larger sizes is done MANUALLY, by turning the output end-for-end and replacing it in the paper tray. This forces us to do TWO print runs for each newsletter, rather than the anticipated ONE, so the expected gain in productivity is lost.

Contrary to what some reviewers have said, we found that installation on our in-house wireless network was extremely easy -- and didn't even require the recommended USB cable mentioned in the documentation. The printer, the network, and all networked computers "found" each other automatically within a few seconds.

I'm not sure our rating would have been 5-star even if this limitation had been clearly mentioned, as there are other makes that can to autoduplexing on larger paper. So it's four stars (at least until we discover more undocumented limitations).

UPDATE: More missing features...

1 - No manual feed option for printing. The only option for an occasional one- or two-sheet run on a "different" paper size is to replace a "standard" paper size in one of the cassettes, make the short run, and then reinstall the standard paper.

2 - No ability to print "cover" or "card" stock, or any paper stock heavier than 24#. I guess this is coupled with the lack of a manual feed slot, which is the way 90% of competitive printers handle this chore.

Does it all well and quickly too

Most of us are familiar with all-in-one devices so the introduction of another one is not particularly earthshaking. But of the several that I've either owned or used, this Epson is by far the best and most versatile. Of course, the features are similar from device to device, but the execution on the Epson is faster and smoother than any of the others. Added to that, the ability to print such a large range of sizes makes this printer irresistible.

First things first: setup was easy and intuitive. Wireless connection to our home network took just minutes and was accomplished without the recommended USB cable. I just followed the instructions on the screen, entered our password and it was done. This was a pleasant change from another all-in-one from a different manufacturer with which I struggled for far too long. That one drove me to distraction; it was difficult to make the initial connection and then it constantly disappeared from my network when I wanted to use it.

Despite having installed the software from the included CD, I next visited the Epson website where I downloaded updates to the firmware. It took just a few minutes and I don't doubt it was well worth the time. Epson's website is well organized and easy to navigate unlike others I've labored through, so finding what I needed was simple and aggravation-free.

The Epson WorkForce excels at printing. It produces clean, crisp copies in record time (15 prints per minute in black and white, 8 ppm in color). Its two trays will hold up to 500 sheets at a time, either of one size or two different sizes. The ink cartridges are high capacity and each color may be replaced individually, which is convenient and eliminates waste. The feature that I'm finding the most useful is its ability to print sizes up to 13x19. I'm currently putting together a family tree and being able to print out copies on presentation sized paper without having to take it to a copy store is a tremendous time and money saver. I bought some 13x19 paper and I'm delighted with the results. Copies were produced quickly, the quality was very good and there were no paper jams or other untoward incidents. It will also scan documents as large as 11x17. I had no problems with the scanner or the fax functions; both work just as intended.

Great automatic duplex color laser printer

Was looking for an automatic duplex color laser printer for the fiancé who is in med school. Last year, she printed over 10,000 pages. It's important she has color so she can see the details of the anatomy or cardio diagrams she has to print out. She used to have a color Brother 3045CN but there was no auto duplex mode (sucks the paper back in and prints on the other side). She had to manually refeed the paper in to print on the other side and at times would make errors because she put in the wrong way. There goes 20 sheets of paper in the recycle bin. and I realized she needed a better printer.

This printer is amazing. Has great color and auto duplex works like it should. If you know how to setup a router to have wifi password, setting up the wifi on the printer shouldn't that difficult. When you first plug it in, (no need to plug it into a computer or anything), it'll ask you to setup WLAN. Press ok, find your wireless network name, press ok, put in password, press ok, done. Now all the macbooks, windows, iphones, and ipads in the house can print wirelessly.

My only complaint is the starter cartridges that came with it. Like how most printer companies make their money, this printer decided to stop working because the black toner was low. I checked printer status and it shows it printed 600 pages of black! That's it for a starter cartridge?! It refuses to print unless I change the cartridge! I searched online and figured out how to reset the cartridge making it think it has a new toner inside. What you need to do is lift up the top cover and leave it unhinged. Simultaneously press the Secure and the Cancel button at the same time (with top cover open). You will see option to choose which toner you want to reset. Select the one you want, press okay and press the + to confirm reset. Done. Now you can keep using what's left in the toner cartridge which in my case had at least 50% left.

As for refills, this is going to be a tad more difficult than typical Brother cartridges. You are going to need to drill a hole a size of a dime on the top of the cartridge and then pour the ink in. Use same tape to cover up the hole you make. No need for resets gears or any of that. Just do the same procedure as above to reset it and your good to go.

All in all, I'm happy with my purchase. If you print a lot and need decent color printing (not photo quality) and want to print wirelessly, this is the printer to get.

Read this before you buy toner!

Great printer, but the toner life is based (as far as I can tell) solely on pages printed. So if you print x number of pages even with only a single dot of color on it, the printer will count that as a page printed in that color. My starter black toner quit after 250 pages.

Here is how to fix this - open the top of the printer, then simultaneously press the "Secure" and "X Cancel" buttons. This will put the printer into a special service mode. Use the + and - buttons to scroll to whichever toner you want to reset. Each color should have three options which, I believe, allow you to tell the machine what type of 'new' toner cartridge is installed. I think "Y.TNR-STR" is yellow cartridge standard, "Y.TNR-HC" is for the high yield yellow cartridge and "Y.TNR.STD" is for a standard yellow cartridge. Once you've selected the cartridge you want to tell it you're installing hit the "OK" button and will get an "OK reset cancel" type screen. Hit the up arrow to reset. Now you're back to printing in style!

Replace your toner cartridges need to be replaced, not when it tells you to.

Very well worth the money

I bought this model when it has 20% off sale (not Amazon sorry), so I was pleased with its quality and value. Two functions caught my attention when I chose this model, besides being a color printer, the duplex and the AirPrint.

Laser color printer will be useful for kids projects and commercial announcement that I was looking for a long time. I am tired of Samsung's high cost on toners and poor durability so anything buy Samsung will be good for me this time around.

So far so good: the Wi-Fi setup was easy without any intervention: all I need was to press the WPS button on my Cisco router and it is done. No password needed. The duplex works, but need good papers. The initial print time is not a concern for me at all: none of the 4 laser printer works fast on the initial page anyway.

The AirPrint works with iPhone and iPad, which solved my long struggle of frustration. I have to say to Apple though: silly ideas of lacking any control.

Though the initial toners are meant for "starter" the counter built in still show a regular toner capacity. Only time will tell what it is.

The down side for color laser is the cost of toners: you need to replace 4 toners and the waste pan and another something from time to time, which cost more than the printer itself. I already picked up spare toners at about $60 each on-line so the total cost for 5 years is $500. I can accept that.

Another point I need to point out is the weight: just heavy and bulky. But I am glad to finally find a spot for it.

Finally I have to say to Brother about their menu design: poorly designed and hard to master.
