4Lets See What Happens Next
By Ren
Review for:
Samsung UN40H5500 Slim 40-inch 1080p 60Hz Smart LED TV.

Abstract:
I bought this TV shortly after it was available on Amazon. The smart features are excellent. However, I had a variety of problems with two TVs before I purchased a third which was flawless. I have been updating my review here to share what has been going on with the TVs and the returns.

Pros:
Excellent CPU. Previous model had a dual core, this one has a quad core, which means the smart features are faster. The features are excellent. It is true that you can watch Netflix, Amazon videos, browse the internet, and so much more. All smart features work well, except some times that the Youtube app is laggy and prone to crashes (I don't blame the TV on this, but it is more of the app version which is different from one you would see on a smart phone). I do like some features of the Youtube app which allow me to create playlists on my smart phone and watch them on the TV. The Netflix app was recently upgraded and it works even better now, if you like Netflix or Amazon videos, specially if you have Amazon prime, you need one of these TVs. The network card, the hardware component that allows you to connect to your home's wireless network, is perfect. You can connect to 2g or 5g WLAN. Storage on the TV is good, but really you should use an external Hard Drive for home movies and pictures you wish to stream or if you can connect it to your home PC and stream from there. This TV is essentially a computer, so you can always plug in a mouse and keyboard and browse the net. The Smart TV features are excellent, I recommend it.

Cons:
I had to buy three TVs before I received one that was working as intended.

The first one that I bought was returned for it had two clusters of yellow and blue lights stuck on the screen. No matter what I was watching those lights would show up. I quickly contacted Amazon and returned it. Amazon's return policy is, as always, excellent. I received a second TV, but this one had a dead pixel; therefore I returned it as well. It felt more like a hassle than anything, but again you can trust Amazon to take care of any problems like this; you won't even have to pay the return shipping.

Extra information:
Since I was asked below in the comments. This model does not come with a smart remote or voice control; you would need to get the 6400+ model if you want those features. You could buy the smart remote and use it perfectly well on this TV, but voice recognition won't work.

I am upgrading my review from 3 stars to 4. I recommend this TV, the fact that I received two defective ones does not mean all are defective. For the price and features you will receive, you are getting one of the best TVs on the market. If you want something worthy of a 5 star review you need to look at the 6350 or 6400 Samsung models, which I plan to review soon.

Sincerely,
R.

4Very nice but some issues...
By K. O'Toole
The picture quality of this TV is more than adequate but the sound was typical of most TVs...weak. I ordered a sound bar to handle the audio requirements. As others have reported Samsung tech support is wholly inadequate and the literature supplied was equally pore. Once I payed my dues ( four hours with a tech from our cable provider on day one and another two hours on day two) the TV finally "Smartened up" and I was able to start enjoying the Smart TV experience. It's been about three weeks and I'm still discovering new capabilities which by the way you'll have to sort out on your own unless you happen to know someone who's already been through it. I was actually considering returning the TV at one point but I decided to stick it out and I'm glad I did. You can pair the tv with other devices ie: smart phones, laptops, cameras, etc and transfer images, videos, music, etc wirelessly . Connecting to Youtube and Netflix is a snap once you get past the learning curve.

4Ok, television, but missing features
By GhostCow
The screen quality on this television is very good. It's about as good as you can expect from a TN panel. The television was very easy to set up and it has no problems streaming wirelessly from my WD My Cloud 4tb NAS without having to install any additional software such as plex. This television does seem to be missing a couple of features that older models have though. For one, the Samsung TV remote app for android will not work with the television. You'll be able to see the television in the app, but it will not connect. Samsung tech support told me that this is not a supported feature for this television.

Also, it seems that you can no longer move the apps around on the smarthub anymore, so you cannot organize your applications as far as I can tell. I asked Samsung support about this and they said that the television is too new for tech support to have any information on it. Samsung seems to have dropped the ball on the support for this television pretty badly. I feel bad for their agents having to support this stuff with no resources.

5TV will keep you happy until 4K is perfected & prices lowered
By Concerned Consumer
*Updated after 9 months*

Overall: I have had this TV series for about 9 months now. I am VERY pleased with the purchase. Glad I went to the 60". The previous ES8000 model was plagued with cloudiness, banding--both gone in F series(55/60" tested). Flashlighting is minimal on this set and improved over the ES series. I needed a LED TV upgrade and was on a budget ($2500 OTD/with tax) that didn't place me in the local array dimming technology zone(I believe to be the best type of TV right now). Plasma's are too reflective for my environment and the extra heat is unwanted (check out the Samsung PN51F8500 though, sounds like it is well liked).

Right away I noticed how solid the TV itself felt. IF I had to do it over again, I would definitely recommend the 55" OR 60" F8000 for others to buy over the ES8000. Just ensure you get the best deal for it as the MSRP is way overpriced. For ES8000 owners...I wouldn't upgrade. No way. This TV will hold me over until 4K's are on the market for awhile, helping companies perfect the tech and lower the price.

Be wary of some of these random 1 star reviews, as many users do not even own the F series TV! Or they had an issue because they didn't have the right settings configured. If you read the comments, under those reviews you will see they fixed their issue. I feel this TV rates 5 stars as I believe this tech is at it's "ceiling" and there is minimal room for improvement using edge lit tech.

For those who wish the short and simple, thats it! Keep reading for indepth review.

Current FIXABLE problems with firmware 11.16:
-3D setting "light control" settins on "high" resets to "low"
-Netflix, Vudu, Amazon Prime, DLNA video's all have cinema black disabled(supposedly this can be fixed in app updates but its remained off)

Picture Quality: The picture quality on this TV is fantastic especially after a few color tweaks (posted below). The blacks are so DEEP compared to my last tv(direct lit led). There is a SMALL amount of flash lighting in all four corners(more noticable on 60" when in PC mode); I believe this is a fault for ALL edge lit tv's as that is how the image functions. I can only notice flashlighting in all black lighting with something like movie title in middle of screen and black on rest of screen, or if in PC mode with a most black screen. Unless you are really looking for it in a black screen and concentrated on a corner you will not notice flashlighting. Also when testing it, please play a movie or something, as when the menu is up or the TV states "check source HDMI not connected" flashlighting is more evident and nobody uses their TV to watch a blank screen.

Viewing Angle: Fairly limited until it begins to wash out(ALL edge-lit tech will have this issue). You will notice the farther off center you will notice more of a degradation in picture quality. This doesn't bother me as my "seat" is always right in front. Most end users are not as particular or picky as me when it comes to picture quality, many will not even care or notice a difference until a more extreme angle(an angle you can't reach in the room my TV is in). I sit about 14 feet away and if I go 4 feet to either side, I cannot notice the picture washing out.

Price: MSRP is overpriced. Ensure you get a good deal and get a store to pricematch to best price you can find. The 55" should be around $1730 and 60" $1945. I attempted to get Amazon to price match a store that was not on their official authorized list and they refused (attempted multiple times, through different numbers and chat). It was a $500 difference. When I was looking I found the 60" as low as $2400 at the time. I ended up having the local Best Buy price match this tv for me. I bought my last flagship Samsung TV in 2008/9. The A850 model(now in bedroom, this TV still satisfies me and looks better than many lower model new Samsung TV's on market today).

Stand: I hated the TV stand. To feng shui for me. My wife loved it though. It actually fit our TV stand, be warned if you have a small TV stand it will not fit...this stand is very wide. This helps the tv to appear to "float". It even came with some sort of oversized plastic screws and rope that ensured a child couldn't pull the TV down (smart). I planned on mounting this TV though like my last TV, so the stand doesn't matter much to me.

Wall Mount: I opted for a low profile wall mount from Monoprice. The one I picked was $14 and the product ID number is 5918 from monoprice's website. I linked the same mount below through amazon but it is $8 more here. This places the TV pretty much ON the wall with this mount. It's about 19mm off of the actual wall. I was able to run the power cord and a Redmere technology HDMI thin cord(10ft for $17 over at Monoprice..same cord is cheaper on Amazon)Monoprice 10-Feet HDMI Cable with RedMere Technology. It came with all the necessary bolts and spacers for the F8000 (1 small/1 large on top bolts and 2 smalls on bottom bolts). Monoprice Ultra-Slim Low Profile Wall Mount Bracket

Heat: Had the TV on for 12 hours and couldn't find any hot spots or to much heat to make me worried with how close the TV was to the wall. Was an issue on certain ES8000 sets last year causing a V spot of cloudiness.

Remote: The remote is solid and touch part feels just like a laptop. It's not a gimmick at all and actually works great. I find it easy to type with there on screen keyboard. Came with crappy batteries so I opted for some standard spare ones I had in the house. It would have been nice to get a standard remote though for older generations that do not like touchpad technology. *update* The TV now comes with a 2nd standard remote. For those of you like me that did NOT receive a remote, apply for free standard remote here: (LINKS not allowed, look in comments for direct link) To manually do it, goto samsung's website and locate your TV i.e. UN60F8000 and click the "Support" tab. On that page at the top there is a blue box that states "click here to see if you qualify for a free IR remote". Click that link and fill the form out and it will inform you if you can recieve the free remote.

Extended Warranty: I bought my warranty through Costco's squaretrade deal for $99. It will cover ME for 4 years. If I used my American Express card it would have been 5 years. Research your own warranties and determine if you are ok with how squaretrade handles their warranties, they will not put more money into it then what the TV is worth (pretty sure it is actually what YOU paid for it). You do not need to be a Costco member to purchase this warranty.

Smart Hub/"Smart TV" features: Easy, smooth. It would be nice if it was a bit more customizable. Its nice to have all apps in one system. I liked it better than my blurray player app system(panasonic). Browsing the internet is as smooth as Safari on my iPhone 5. EXCEPT when dealing with flash, then it slows way down...I'm not sure if flash is compatible. Netflix and Amazon Video stream fine, just wish they had the Smart LED feature. S-Recommended works for many different providers in my area to include my service which is newer(Century Link Prism TV..similiar to FIOS tv). Not a fan of motion control, not useful yet, to gimmicky. Voice seems fairly well if you practice at using it although I had a movie set it off twice in a matter of 3 weeks. I prefer to hit buttons myself, using your voice still isn't natural to me. I was able to stream DLNA sources easily(up to 1080P 3D) with no issues wireless on a 5ghz network. Only issue is DLNA servers on Samsung TV's don't let you fastfoward so you have to find a workaround for certain movie formats. My solution was using ZappoTV(free app on iphone) to inform my NAS DLNA to stream to TV...then I could FF/Rewind on tv with touchpad remote(flicking remote left or right) OR doing it form my phone. Samsung's media center is caveman like and basic. PLEX and other apps available on the TV look so much nicer. They really need to overhaul how it functions especially since this TV has such a fast processor.

Smart LED: This is certainly more of a "personal" setting depending on what you prefer to stare at. I believe if you are a videophile that is obcessed with "trueness" leave it on low or off. I went from 'low' to 'standard' and really enjoy it there.

Cinema Black: I love this feature it certinaly makes the bars more black on widescreen movies. Again you be the judge of this feature, let your eyes guide you.

Devices: Hooked up my 10-13 year old 1st gen microsoft bluetooth mouse and keyboard. Worked just fine, somewhat impressed how functional it seemed to be.

Banding: I did several different banding tests and had no banding. I found none on the 55"/60", I have yet to see a 65" without minimal banding.

Stuttering: I really had to work on finding something to get this tv to stutter. My bluray player on any movie? No. Streaming all different types of formats up to 1080P 3D quality on my laptop to TV via HDMI..no stutter. Streaming from my NAS(Synology DS213+) to TV with same formats/qualities listed above. No stuttering. Other users have noted stuttering on Verizon FIOS though and had to set their AMP to clear. Mine works great on custom(settings below).

Sound: No idea, disabled it to use my own external speakers(newegg runs crazy sales on polk audio speakers) and a Denon 2112CI..link to the current model Denon AVR-2113CI. A few years ago I spent $700 for Samsung's HTIB. HUGE mistake, multiple repairs in and out of warranty. Do yourself a favor and invest in a real audio company that has longer warranties and stand behind their product for longer for audio.

The firmware I'm currently running is 11.16. Right when I started the TV and setup network it notified me that I had an update available. I click do not update and selected to turn automatic updates off. Still, Samsung updated the firmware (they are known to sometimes do this) initially. This can be a bad thing as in the past on other sets they sometimes take away features or make the sets look worse--not better. Fortunately this has not happened again(6 updates and going strong). On my last TV it was easy to upgrade OR downgrade firmware...now it's a PITA to downgrade but still possible.

Evolution Kits: I think until these kits prove themselves they are a complete and utter joke. UNLESS these kits prove themselves somehow improving picture quality. It is possible though with a better PCU, better color accuracy could be obtained. If they don't at most I might update the last year its "compatible" with my set to upgrade the processor.

Game Mode: This setting helps reduce lag while playing through your gaming consoles(Xbox One/PS4). Its important to update to 11.16 if you want to try game mode as it functions well on more current firmware. I played BF4 on my Xbox One and did not notice any input lag. On earlier firmware's there was a noticable different between how great PC mode was and game mode. Although on firmware version 11.10 and later versions "Game Mode" seems to perform slightly better similiar to PC mode. This is great news as you have much more control over color settings in game mode(such as smart led). Game mode tests around 26ms and PC mode 28ms. This is great for gamers!
Menu>System>General>Game Mode>On

NOTE: PC mode can only be accessed on sources not assigned to a "Samsung" device(i.e. Samsung Bluray) or any input set up with their universal remote system...it renames source forcing a keyboard naming option that does not enable PC mode. Simply select HDMI 1/2/3/4, select tools(top right), a drop down list should appear, select PC and select it. This mode/dropdown list is ONLY accessible from HDMI's that weren't previously assigned to a Samsung Product or your universal remote. If you wish to assign PC mode to a port previously assigned to STB, just delete the universal remote settings.

The features currently disabled in 11.16 are:

Game mode settings not available:

Picture Options:
Film Mode
Auto Motion Plus
Advanced Settings:
10p White Balance (forced off)
Motion Lighting

PC Mode settings not available(MUCH is disabled):

Summary: This TV is an excellent purchase for the right price. I believe it deserves 5 out of 5 stars as it has very MINOR flaws: somewhat pricy, stand wide, stutters nonexistent on my tv service(Century Link Prism TV), flashlighting (BARELY there, doesn't even bother me as I believe edge lit tech is as good as it will get and Samsung needs to hurry up and take over sharp's patents so they can get back to local dimming array models OR get more OLED's on the market).

Current Color Setting's I'm using from an online forum member's home calibrator's settings and slight tinkering of my own(remember, all sets are different and you should use this only as an end user as a good "base" too start with and tweak to your liking's..thats why mine do not match his, also I added turned on cineblack/smartled):

5This is a wonderful television
By CC reader
We researched extensively before replacing our 10 year old set. We knew we wanted backlit LCD rather than Plasma and we wanted to go bigger. We looked at many sets but settled on the Samsung UN55ES7200 and UN55F8000. Based upon the reviews there were some issues with the ES8000, which was an early generation of Samsung smart tvs. While that set is meaningfully less expensive we are glad we went with the F8000 released in 2013. The picture is incredibly crisp and, despite its size the set is slim and light weight. The clicker has a touch pad feature and the connections with the internet, HBO, Amazon, Netflix are very easy (even for a non-technically savvy person like me). It connected easily (although it was missing 2 screws which Samsung sent out very quickly) so set up time was nominal. There have been no resolution or lighting issues (as have been described in the ES8000). I have only one constructive comment, the resolution is so very good that you can sometimes see the artificial nature of the movie sets in older movies. If that is the only problem we encounter I believe that is something that can be overlooked. We are really pleased with the purchase and, as always, Amazon delivery was fast and convenient.

5Unbelievable!!
By K. Coste
I am a professional video producer who is seldom truly impressed. My previous TV was a Panasonic 50 inch plasma, which was working perfectly, and I had been waiting and watching the industry for when I should jump to the next level. This, among other choices, including new plasmas, was it. Pricey, but some things in life are worth it.

Out of the box, I was not happy at all, and it turns out there are a multitude of factory settings that need adjustment. The biggest culprit was something called Auto Motion Plus, which Samsung should never have made the factory default, and should be turned off forever. It was designed as an aid to fast moving action scenes utilizing the high refresh rate, but it turns a stunningly beautiful movie into a soap opera video. The rest are a matter of personal taste, as in color balances, contrast, saturation, black levels, etc. I keep the Cinema Black off, as this unit does a great job with the blacks in other areas of the menu. Skin tones are the true test.

Off axis viewing is less than ideal, and there is some edge light visible at times on dark scenes, but I continue to be stunned by the image, especially the 3D, which is mesmerizing, super-vivid and hyper-real.

There are those who are saying 3D is a fad that will pass, but they are dead wrong, and obviously have NOT seen the likes of this TV in a dark space. 3D is no more a fad than experiencing life with two eyes rather than one. I would add though, that for 3D to be effective, the screen must be large, as it can be a little like looking through a window if too small.

5excellent so far
By Pete S
This model just came out and i bought it today. picture is excellent, what i like to call movie theater quality. I haven't used the web browser or downloaded movies. I played a bluray and it was great, the depth of the picture and clarity are excellent. I talked with sharp and they told me that soon they will be having a service where you can call them and they can remotely tweak the tv which i am looking forward to. I'm looking forward to 4k in the future. If you decide to get this tv I would definately recommend upgrading your HDMI cables to 2.0 as opposed to 1.4 This tv comes with the 2.0 HDMI built in which is the standard for 4k If you have a 2013 TV or older check with your manufacturer about possibly upgrading the HDMI inputs to 2.0 , rumor has it that sony will be sending out installers to upgrade customers for free. I also haven't tried the 3D , I didnt receive any glasses in the box and from what ive heard my older active glasses will not work with this set. Overall this TV seems great for the money, can't wait for my friends to check it out

I wanted to add that I used the 3d it works great. the glasses need to be bought separately . Also the 4k ready if used will be 2k not true 4k. The upscaling revelation technology seems to be awesome and is what makes the picture look great I am assuming. If you are looking for a great picture for bluray and HD this set delivers, if you want one with true 4k for the future your gonna need to shell out an extra 2 grand.

5Incredible TV!
By mwisker
My wife and I purchased this TV because we needed a larger TV for our living room. I have to say that everything about it is amazing! Picture clarity is phenomenal! The on screen menus are a little confusing as is the integrated owner's manual. I would recommend downloading a PDF of the manual for ease of use. We are certainly not disappointed! There is some information online stating that any active shutter 3D glasses will work with this TV. This is not true. You must buy the Sharp active 3D glasses. Other than these very small things we are completely satisfied with this purchase!!

5Very nice TV indeed
By John Wang
This TV replaced my 2-year old Samsung UN55EH6000FXZA 55" LED TV. Out of the box, I didn't notice any dead pixels, clouding, or bleeding. Initial step-by-step setup was easy to follow. I followed this calibration setting to bring out the best of what this TV can offer. No regrets...worth every penny!

3Many DON'T HAVE SAMSUNG PANELS - HUGE quality difference
By HopefullyThoughtful
Many of these TVs don't have a Samsung panel (the screen/the part that has/makes the image!)! I cannot believe this has not been mentioned. It makes a SUBSTANTIAL difference, because some panels they use should be in TV's that cost $100 less.

Can you imagine buying a car because you know its manufacturer uses great, reliable engines, only to find out that they use completely different engines without telling you, all of which are of lower quality? Samsung does this with their TVs, and some of them don't EVER have Samsung panels (e.g., the 37" model will NEVER have a Samsung panel because they don't make 37" panels). Samsung uses 4 different panel types from four different manufacturers - each with a substantially different technology.

You can tell which panel YOUR TV has by the "Version" on the sticker outside of the box. There's also a sticker on the back of the TV; the "Version" code is below the Model number and above the S/N. BTW, reviews can't be interpreted without the four-digit Version code because they are quite simply different TV's. Here's how to interpret them:
("x" means a number, probably from 1-4, that represents the version of that panel - higher means newer but not always better).

TH0x or TS0x: Samsung S-PVA panel (possibly just a PVA, if you're less lucky): This is what you thought you were buying. Best color, best black, best viewing angles.
HS0x: Sharp ASV panel: Lower contrast ratio, more narrow viewing angle. I read HS02 in particular has terrible ghosting.
A_0X: AOU A-MVA panel: Even lower contrast ratio.
CH0x or CM0x or CS0x: Chimea S-MVA panel: You lost the lottery. Markedly worse in every way - way worse viewing angle, color reproduction, etc. Just a terrible rip-off.

Mine, from Amazon, is an HS03, so a Sharp panel. I will be testing it tomorrow (DVD and watching football - no Blu-ray). There is a decent chance I return it, because it is not a Samsung. Also? Sony and Panasonic do much less "panel lottery" and are vowing to stop entirely. LG does not do a panel lottery. Samsung has absolutely no plans to stop, and they only use "standards" that won't reveal a difference between the different panels.

I will update after doing more testing. I just simply could not believe that this was not mentioned. Nothing like finding out you paid $500 (40" model) for a $400 TV when that extra $100 could have been used for sound, Blu-Ray, etc.

**Other reviewers, please, update your reviews to give your version code!**

5Great TV after a lot of tweaking
By Gordon
If you're anything like me you see that this TV is labeled as LED; then you look at the picture and see a lot of fat for the usual Samsung LED depth. Make no mistake this is an LED TV. I got this for my bedroom to replace my 23 inch Samsung Syncmaster. I use this TV mostly for 1080 mp4 movies and blurays (I download what I want to watch instead of waiting for it on cable), and my Xbox and PS3.

I learned 2 things about the TV right off the bat. If you have Comcast, you cannot fully customize the TV's picture. An essential feature called HDMI black levels actually looks much better when its set to low. I have 2 different Comcast HD boxes and since neither of them broadcast at 1080, this feature is locked out. Long story short, Comcast had me thinking I purchased my first dud from Samsung. Seriously, the colors look washed out and none of the channels really had that crisp clear picture I was hoping for. If you plan to use this solely for Comcast, I can't really recommend it. In fact, I've always found blu ray quality to be so much better than cable that I've stopped using cable for anything but football and cartoons. Movies MUST be in my PS3's blu ray player or my own 1080p files.

The second thing I learned about is what the depth is for. Samsung didn't advertise this (or maybe its just my TV), but I have absolutely NO BACKLIGHT BLEED. When Black Ops goes to the loading screen on my Xbox, it gets so dark that I think the TV is off! The only indication that it is on is the Black Ops logo in the corner spinning. There isn't even the SLIGHTEST inkling of white anywhere! I'm not exaggerating. The obvious second reason why this TV is fat for an LED is that Samsung made an effort to improve the sound. When I turn on the HD surround coupled with the movie option, there is much more bass than I thought it would be. THe explosions in my games and the soundtracks in movies sound vastly better than I thought they would. Granted, I am not the type to go out and spend 600 on some Bose speakers, but the sound is NOT a con for me this time around.

NOW ON TO THE PICTURE

As I said, I was not exactly thrilled with the picture RIGHT off the bat. It looked like my old 23 inch Syncmaster, just a lot bigger. Let me tell you, this is not one of those TV's that look great right out of the box. You have to toy around with the settings a bit to get the optimal picture. I wanted sharpness coupled with colors that pop like crazy.....and I got it. Dynamic is the brightest setting, but I coupled this with the HDMI black levels set to low (option not available for Comcast cable box) and voila, moving photographs! I'm not a pro but this is my setup:

Mode: Dynamic

Backlight: 18

Contrast: 85

Brightness: 50

Sharpness: 80

Color: 70

TInt: G/R 50/50

Standard color tone with screen fit in the additional options, with HDMI black level set to low.

My games and blurays look AMAZING. The picture is easily better than my mom's 46 inch Samsung up front. REMEMBER that some of the good options are cut off from Comcast and the use of component cables. In games, I do have to up the brightness or gamma a little, but it ends up looking BRILLIANT. I am going through my entire library of games and they feel like entirely new experiences! There is a 32 inch 720p option as well, but I just was not comfortable with 720p max. The new game consoles are gojng to have native 1080 so that's what I wanted. BTW did I mention I'm a big gamer?

THE CONS

Well I saw this TV up on Amazon before it was on Samsung's website. Yeah, WOW. Sometimes I wanted to see the TVs specs from Samsung directly before I made my buy. Make no mistake this is NOT a 120 HZ tv although it is labeled as one. I have no idea what clearmotion 120 is, but it makes my TV much darker. The feature is entirely useless and does nothing to the picture or add the "soap opera" effect like I had hoped (it looks great for games).

WITH A COMCAST CABLE BOX I could see no difference between HDMI and component. I kept switching back and fourth, but since the max output is 1080i, there were no differences in picture.

The last iteration of this TV had 4 HDMIs. What happened?

VERDICT

With a lot of tweaking, I got the picture to look beautiful. I will use my Comcast box sparingly, but I might move to FIOS if the support full 1080. Watching movies on my PS3 and playing games on my Xbox stopped me from returning the TV. I will not be surprised if this set gets bad reviews from Comcast users (even though Its not Samsung's fault). I'm a "videophile" and this passed my personal test with vibrant colors.

5Fantastic TV (after a few minor adjustments)
By bareyb
If you are looking for the best picture quality for the buck, you have found it. Samsung put the money where it matters most and if you don't care about 3D or a bunch of inputs this is a great buy. This is the hands down winner for a Back Lit LED TV at this price point.

Pros:
Great Picture quality (with a few adjustments, see below)
Really good Sound Quality. Better than most.
Matte Screen (not Glossy), so low reflections in bright rooms
Full Array LED backlighting (versus "Edge lit" Fluorescent as most LCD's have)
Great styling. The angled corners on the bottom, the large base and thin bezel all come together to give it a sophisticated look.

Cons:
Stock picture settings. Picture is a bit soft and washed out with the stock configuration. You need to adjust the settings to get it to really shine to it's full potential.

I used the Display Mate DVD to professionally calibrate the screen and I used those settings as a starting point. My personal preference is for a bit more "pop" and a sharper picture and I think I've come up with the ideal settings for this particular TV. I listed all the "Default" settings, the "Display Mate Calibration DVD" Settings, and my Personal Settings below. Hope that helps you find the settings that work best for you.

Default Settings:

Mode: Standard

Backlight 18

Contrast 95

Brightness 45

Sharpness 20

Color 50

Tint: G/R 50/50

******************************************

Calibrated with "Display Mate" DVD:

Mode: Dynamic

Backlight 20

Contrast 100

Brightness 45

Sharpness 0

Color 41

Tint: G/R 50/50

****************************************

My Settings:

Mode: Dynamic

Backlight 18

Contrast 98

Brightness 45

Sharpness 60

Color 50

Tint: G/R 50/50

* Color Tone "Standard" and "Screen Fit" in Picture Options. LED "Motion Plus" option: OFF

3The Streamlight Protac HL works well in the end, but not without hastle and more money spent in the begininng.
By Andrew
I bought this flashlight because I work security detail in an ugly part of my city, and when I need a flashlight, I need it to work consistently every time - because my life could depend on it. For a standard flashlight, that may be too much to ask for, but for a flashlight of this reputation and price, I was expecting much more. I bought the Streamlight Protac HL 2 months ago. It worked for about a month (long enough for the return time to expire), and then the 600 lumen output drastically decreased. I assumed it was exhausted batteries, and so I bought a new package of batteries. The Streamlight did not regain its 600 lumen output. It put out less than 200 lumen, in my estimations. At times the light did not turn on at all when the switch was pressed. I assumed that this was my fault, that maybe I didn't know how to use the Streamlight's "ten-tap" technology. After all, I couldn't find anything on the internet suggesting that anyone had ever had a problem with a Streamlight. I even bought another package of batteries, just to be sure that expired batteries weren't to blame. Sure enough, it was a problem with the flashlight. Bear in mind, I had not abused the light, submerged it, dropped it, exposed it to shock or high heat, and I would go as far as to say I babied it. It spent most of its time in the holster, on my belt.

Streamlight has a limited lifetime warranty on parts defects, and so I decided to send the flashlight to the Streamlight repair facility, after filling out an online repair form on Streamlight's website, accompanied by a detailed description of the problem. I asked them to call me with their findings. I paid for 2 day priority mail, it was shipped within 2 days to their facility, and by the morning of the 3rd day, it was marked as shipped back to customer. I called them and asked what the problem was with my light, and they said it was that I must be using bad or inferior batteries, because they couldn't find anything wrong with the light. I told them that there was indeed a problem with the light, and that I had used both Energiser and Duracell batteries with expiration dates of 2021, and they said that I must be mistaken, and that they strongly recommend more new batteries. Personally, I don't think they looked at it at all.

When the flashlight shipped back to me, I decided to inspect it myself. I figured I'd lose nothing since honoring the warranty was seemingly ignored by Streamlight, and as is, I had a useless paperweight of a flashlight. I started by cutting the rubber button on the tail-cap off, exposing the "guts" of the flash-light's switch, and immediately exposing the problem: corrosion in the tail-cap. An easy fix that I believe that Streamlight should have easily found and fixed. I ordered a new tail-cap on eBay for $16, and the light works like new.

In the end: Does the light work now? Yes, but because I fixed the problem.
Did it work in the beginning? No.
Did Streamlight honor the warranty? No. They insinuated that I was mistaken to weasel out of warranty work, and offered no solution to the problem.
Total cost of flash light after repairs, shipping, and batteries: Easily over $100
Would you recommend this product? No. The product is made in China, offers quality craftsmanship, but poor quality control, and customer service is marginal at best. For you to buy a flash light this expensive, you would have to need it for a tactical/emergency situation, and if it doesn't work in even simple situations, you have a serious problem.

I will probably get steam-rolled for this negative review, but I can only report my experience. I can't speak for the entire Streamlight brand, nor other model flashlights of this brand. I'm only speaking from my experience, and this being my first and only Streamlight, I can tell you that I'm not pleased.

4Great light at a ground breaking price.
By Haef
First, I vacillated between 4 and 5 stars here. I'd give it 5 if it had every feature I wanted, but I'm also picking nits here.

I've only used this light a bit, but I wanted to report on it for those considering one. It's been backordered for months, but did actually ship when the seller said it would.

The PT HL is a crazy bright light, at a price that beats similarly priced lights with lesser output. I have a Surefire GX2 Pro, which is a very good comparison, given they are at a similar price point (indeed the GX2's are priced $15 higher than the PT HL!; bet that situation changes soon...). Both are similar in size and use two CR123A batteries, both have high/low output capabilities.

Some comparisons:

OUTPUT:
PT HL low/high 35/600 lumens, GX2 15/200

Both use LED's; why anyone would buy an old-school bulb flashlight is beyond me unless you are incredibly cheap. Then why are you looking at this light? The ONE virtue of bulbs you don't find in LED flashlights is, with a few exceptions, adjustable beam spread. But the efficiency and reliability of LED's so far outweighs bulbs I don't mind the tradeoff. Just be careful to pick the proper light for your application, which mainly means "how close is your work area?"

To Streamlight's credit, the beam spread of the PT HL is actually a bit wider than the GX2. This is especially good for close work. Creating a pencil-thin beam is a good way to make your output figures look great by concentrating the light in one spot, but such a beam isn't very practical unless you are trying to illuminate something hundreds of feet away.

I'll also be interested to see if I find the slightly brighter low setting a good or bad thing.

So is 600 lumens bright? Why, yes it is! It isn't mind-bogglingly brighter than 200 lumens (which is very bright mind you), but it is most certainly brighter.

BATTERY LIFE:
Streamlight also somewhat 'fess's up about the runtime one can expect when using the high output setting. Their literature states 1 hr 15min on high, 18h on low. But they also provide a graph of the high output as a function of runtime: by 45 minutes, you'll be to half power, by 1.25hrs you'll be to 60 lumens. Let's call it about an hour on high. The GX2 is rated 2hrs high (2hrs until light drops below 50 lumens), 45 hrs on low, so both manufacturer''s are at least writing their specs in a similar manner.

Since I mostly use the low setting, I'm fine with the 18hrs. If you need to constantly use the high setting, you would probably be better off finding a light with greater battery capacity or rechargeability. But then you are talking about a physically larger light.

WATER RESISTANCE:
PT HL "IPX 7" waterproof, which translates to immersion in water up to 1 meter deep, GX2 is "water resistant".

CONSTRUCTION:
PT HL machined aluminum in black, GX2 Nitrolon plastic in black and a few other colors. The aluminum light is very slightly heavier, but as tough as the Nitrolon seems, I think they would both survive similar abuse. One virtue of the Nitrolon is it's non-conductivity, so if you are choosing a light for electrical work, plastic might be a deciding factor. Dropping a flashlight onto bus bars should not be an exciting experience.

SWITCH:
Both are operated via momentary/sustained pushbutton on tail. GX2 has low/high settings, PT HL has three different configurations you can program the button to: high-strobe-low, hi only, low-high. Not sure why they don't give a couple more options, such as low-high-strobe. I don't see myself using the strobe feature much except perhaps for long distance signaling. Normally I want the low-high behavior (like the GX2), but it would be nice to be able to get to the strobe if desired. Putting the strobe in the middle of the high-strobe-low program seems odd, but I'm not using it for tactical purposes. Perhaps it makes SWAT guys happy, but I don't want to have to step through the strobe to get to the low & high settings that I'll be using 98% of the time, and I rarely see myself wanting to start the light on high.

OTHER:
The PT HL comes with a nylon holster, the GX2 does not. Both provide an option for a lanyard, but both suffer the problem of the lanyard attachment point being part of either the pocket clip (standard with the PT HL), or a ring sandwiched between the body and tailcap of the GX2. If you find the pocket clip (like a ball point clip) on the PT HL annoying, you can remove it. Both types of clip don't look like they would survive if you really yanked the lanyard. But if something is pulling the light that hard, maybe you don't want the lanyard around your neck to be connected to the light anymore...

The PT HL pocket clip is also deathly tight: if you want to use the clip, you'll probably want to adjust it with pliers to your liking.

I also don't see much in the way of other accessories for this light (yet). I'd like a red filter, which is available for the GX2.

In summary, this is a great super-bright light, by one of the oldest names in flashlights. I think they've got a winner here for sure. Probably the things you'll want to consider in making your choice are: case color, run time, intensity, plastic or metal case, need for seizure-inducting strobe feature.

--------------

A little update:

-After studying the lanyard clip on the PT HL, it would take an immense amount of force to tear it off the light. The only downside is if you want to use a lanyard attachment point but find the "pen clip" feature needless and in the way, too bad, you get them as a team.

-Unlike the GX2, you have to double-click the button to move between modes. Sometimes. I can't figure out Steamlight's logic behind this. I.e.: You click once to turn on the light, double-click to move from low to high, single-click to move back to low. Part of this makes sense, since a hard press of the button is electrically turning the light on and off, but a gentle touch is making a momentary interruption the software can pick up on to change states. But even then, some soft touches are single presses and some are double.

The switch is well designed and requires a deliberate touch, so I don't think this programming prevents any accidental changes. The double-click takes a tiny bit of getting used to, as the GX2 just requires you to click the button once to switch modes. One the other hand, the GX2 has the twist-to-turn-on feature, which is annoying in its own special way. More problematic is when the ProTAC is set to hi-strobe-low, I find it hard to get from strobe to low. It's oddly touchy about how you double-click it. I don't much care in this particular situation because as I mentioned I don't see myself using that button setup.

-My reaction to the brighter low setting of the PT HL vs. the GX2's low setting: It's brighter, duh. There might be a very good reason Streamlight chose this brightness level for the low setting, perhaps in response to some particular user group feedback. I'm afraid for my miscellaneous uses it is a tad unnecessarily bright; what I really would like to see is another couple of program settings for the button, either extralow-high, or extralow-low-high, or extralow-low-high-strobe! Hey, it's got a processor in it, why not make it do everything? You just don't need this this much light on low to look at a map or read a driver's license. All it does is manage to temporally trash your night vision.

-After extensive night-time walking around the woods and fields near the house, it becomes apparent just how much brighter the PT HL is than the GX2. GX2 is no slouch, but this is really wicked bright, and I like the distribution of the beam better than the GX2. The only thing that makes it that much more amazing is that it's coming from a little light you had in your pocket a moment ago!

-One minor but possibly important oddity: Apparently the PT HL is using a pulse width modulation (PWM) scheme to provide the low light setting. What this means is that the processor is pulsing the LED on and off very quickly, so quickly that the light appears constantly on but dim. The downside to this is when in the low setting, the frequency of the PWM is fairly slow. If you are out in the rain or snow, you'll notice a stroboscopic stop-motion effect with the rain drops or snow flakes. This may just be annoying but perhaps more seriously, if you are considering using this to service equipment with spinning parts, it may create a hazardous situation if you are looking at gears or blowers, and the stroboscopic effect causes the spinning equipment to appear to be running at different speeds than it really is, even backwards, or barely moving at all! You won't have this problem on the high setting, but you've been warned. The GX2 does not seem to exhibit this behavior.

More testing on this issue: As mentioned, the low setting of the PT HL strobes above the persistence of vision, which is why it doesn't look like it is strobing. But the pulse rate is a very low 130Hz, or pulses per second. This is slow. I tried shining it on a variety of moving devices around the house to see what the effect would be. Blowers, power tools, car parts, appliances and the like. While you might be viewing these objects with some ambient light diffusing the effect, if you are relying solely on the light of the PT HL you may have issues. At 130Hz, I can make spinning drills appear to stop or even run backwards. Same with low speed cutting devices like a reciprocating saw. Peering under the hood of the car, radiator fans appeared to turn slowly, belts and pulleys slowed, stopped, or ran backwards dependent upon engine speed. In short, this phenomenon can range from totally inconsequential in some applications, annoying in others (think snow or rain as I mentioned), to downright dangerous if it causes you to misinterpret the operating state of some piece of machinery you are looking at. Imagine a noisy mechanical room where you can't tell by hearing if a particular piece of equipment is running, and you are evaluating a spinning gear solely on its motion. Go ahead and touch it...

This issue may be tolerable if you are aware of its existence; if you are purchasing a bunch of these lights for your HVAC mechanics, you might want to seriously consider a different product.

For LEO's, aside from the rain & snow situations I've mentioned, I should also note that if out searching in the tall weeds, moving one's eyes and the flashlight around can also create very subtle strobing effects. The weeds sort of flicker, especially in one's peripheral vision, which is more sensitive to contrast changes then central foveal vision. Some people are more sensitive to this than others, so this tweaky issue may not be a bother to many folk. For the sensitive folks, hunting around in the weeds for a couple of hours looking for evidence may be unnecessarily exhausting & headache inducing.

3Streamlight 600 lumens vs. Coast HP17 600 lumens
By Ed Z
So my Streamlight arrived today and I have been waiting for it to get dark since around noon time. Finally, I took it outside and started to torment my neighbors, excellent compact light. Notice I said compact and not pocket, yes there is a pocket clip but typical of Streamlight, the clip is placed so the head of the light would be down in your pocket. The head of this light is huge, too big to fit comfortably and not to mention it gets stuck in my jeans if I am brave enough to sit down on it. Guys, turn the clip around exposing the head in my pocket and it will speed the deployment as well.

This light is bright, not a pinpoint of light, but a nice medium flood of very bright light. The beam, directed across the street, lights up the entire side of the house (3 bedrooms and a garage) with clean and white usable light. In the distance I can light up trees on the other side of the lake. I can't see a pine cone but I can see the canopy.

So I dragged out my COAST HP17, only because it is also 600 lumens. Now you can fight about the significant size difference. For those who are not familiar, the HP17 is the size and weight of a 3 "D" cell Maglite. So it is not a compact light but it is the same rated lumens, price, and my only other comparable light.

Well the light output of both lights performed the same; I could light up the house across the street, the canopy of the tree across the lake and generally irritate all those around me. But the Coast light has adjustable and locking "spot to flood" and it eats only "D" cells. So overall you get more usable light but in a much bigger package.

Who is the winner? It depends on your size needs and your feeding budget. For my duty belt, I want the Streamlight, for my glove box I want the Coast. Keep in mind the Streamlight will give you less than 90 minutes on High power. The Coast light is still on its original batteries that it arrived with 8 months ago. Feeding the Streamlight is $8-10, while the Coast is filled up for less than $5. Stranded on an island I'll take the Coast because of the battery life and I can use it as a club.

Actually they are both winners, As much as I whine, I have never returned a flashlight and I'm not starting today!
Thanks for reading and I hope I made someone smile today!

5Solid, affordable and easy to install HDTV wall mount
By Mark
I bought this wall mounting system based on the other person's review. I'm glad that I did. UPS delivered this mount on the same day my new TV was getting delivered. With a little measuring, I had this installed in about an hour. It came with all of the hardware and fasteners that I needed. No missing pieces. No damage or scratches. It mounts to studs and it very strong. There are holes in the base plate to run wires through. They are in 2 different places so you can pick the location that fits your situation best. I was worried that this might be a 2-person job but I did everything by myself. I mounted a new 40" Samsung. It fits securely and will not fall off the wall by mistake. I have had to remove the TV 3 times due to adding components and running new wires through the wall. Loosening the security screws on the TV rails allow you to take the TV off of the wall, do your business and hang it back up again in no time. Tighten the security screws once again and you're done. You can tilt the top down if you like but I have mine flush with the wall. It looks classy and there are no visible wires. My wife thought it was magic. This is a great bargain and well made. This is the wall mounting system for you too.

Easy to install and works the same as brackets priced twice as much. I went out on a limb to 'buy cheap' and was rewarded for once - why pay $75 for the same piece of metal just because it's branded? This one works great.

5Heavy duty, excellent buy
By DrivingWheel
Don't let the price fool you into thinking this is not a quality product. Not only is the bracket and arms of solid construction you get an amazing amount of bolts, washers, spacers that will accomodate any flat screen TV.

It comes in a shiny strong box that's shipped in another snug fitting shipping box, so there's no chance of shipping damage.

Seriously, I don't know how Warehouseseller can sell this high quality product for this price.

As the instructions say, make sure you use a stud finder to find the vertical wall studs. You want the lags to hit the center of the stud. Another trick I've learned in locating the center of a stud (if you don't have a stud finder) is to knock on the wall. As you move down the wall you'll hear the sound go from a hollow knock to a harder one. This is where a stud is located.

(Locating the upper two lag bolt hole points) Put a pencil mark at the harder knock point. Now take a drill motor, a 1/16" bit and start drilling holes left and right of your mark until you find both edges of the stud. Adjust your mark to be centered on the first stud. Vertical studs are placed 16" on center, so measure over 16" and locate the 2nd stud in the same manner using the drill motor. Make sure to drill a pilot hole into the stud, so the lag doesn't split the stud. The hole will be the size of the lag shank (thickness of the lag without the threads).

Now that you have the upper lags holes drilled the lower ones should fall into place, but if you feel inclined you can "drill search" the lower ones also.

The built in level is fairly accurate, but I used a 4' level to make sure.

5An exceptional performer, even amongst IPS
By Mr. A. J. Simmons
At first I was a bit unsure as to what to make about the physical dimensions of the product. The screen is wider than a 30" 16:10 monitor but only as tall as a 23" model. It didn't take long before these doubts evaporated. Whilst you don't get the same vertical real-estate that's useful for desktop use as you would on a 2560 x 1440 model, you do get some useful extra width over 1920 x 1080. Where this monitor really shines is for games and movies. The panoramic view and 21:9 aspect ratio gives you a wider FOV horizontally without affecting vertical FOV on most game titles and makes for a truly engaging and immersive experience. Most movies nowadays are filmed in aspect ratios that will fit the monitor very nicely - and although Blu-rays are limited to 1920 x 1080 they upscale beautifully without any obvious loss of detail or sharpness.

Of course there is more to a monitor than just its size. This monitor is also an exceptional performer, even for an IPS panel (I have used many - I review them). Static contrast sits at around 1100:1 after the very small amount of tweaking you have to do to get a perfect 2.2 gamma and 6500K white point. The screen surface is semi-glossy (light matte) and not grainy like older IPS panels. The colour gamut is roughly sRGB, a bit higher but not wide gamut which gives things a vivid but still very natural and appropriately saturated look. This is a true 8-bit IPS panel which combines with a generous (but not wide) colour gamut and light matte screen surface to really do its large size justice. So in summary; everything is vibrant and beautifully varied.

Responsiveness is also strong with no 60Hz monitor (even TN panel ones) offering a significant advantage here. It has well implemented pixel overdrive and around 2ms (if that) of input lag which is really nothing at all.

Obviously dead pixels and whatnot can occur with any mainstream monitor, even those considerably more expensive than this one. Take advantage of Amazon's fantastic returns policy if you need it - this really is a good monitor for all-round use with a particular focus on games and movies.

5Awesome monitor, awesome tech support. Use a high bandwidth, true Dual-Link Cable if Connecting via DVI.
By Derek Van Choice
First, let me say this is a fantastic monitor. Second, I want to commend the tech support at AOC for their superb communication and help with one issue I had (on my end). This monitor is being used entirely for video editing, replacing dual Viewsonic VA912b's, which were connected via DVI cables to an nVidia 9800GT (no HDMI out).

Initially, I connected the AOC with one of the basic DVI cables I had been using for years. When set to 2560x1080, the text was choppy and barely readable and the image unflattering. 1920x1080 was better, but stretched. I emailed AOC tech support and had a reply within an hour, recommending that I connect via DisplayPort/HDMI which, of course, I can't, not having an HDMI out on the card. However, I swapped video cards with my other PC that had HDMI, albeit a slower card, and the AOC worked perfectly, and looked stunning.

A second tech also emailed me within the hour and suggested that I replace my existing DVI cable with a high-bandwidth, true Dual-Link, which I did, via the Tripp Lite P560-006 I purchased here on Amazon. That just arrived and completely solved the problem. I am able to keep using my 9800GT with the AOC at full 2560x1080 res, and it is fantastic.

I must underscore how inspiring it was to have two separate AOC techs reply almost immediately, both with 2 accurate solutions to the problem, which was on my end. Huge props, guys, and thanks for the great monitor, at a killer price!

Update Jan 14, 2014: 5-1/2 Months with this monitor and I love it every bit as much as the day I bought it. Zero issues, and it has had a lot of use. I would buy another in a second.

5Some limitations, but what a beautiful picture, extremely versatile monitor (4.5 stars)
By Mad Max
UPDATE: October 29 2013: After owning & using this monitor for several months, I'm loving it more & more. I'm usually on my laptop, and can't wait to get home & plug into my AOC 29". My productivity goes up, and it's so much easier on the eyes.

I still haven't installed the driver (didn't see the need). And, it continues to perform flawlessly (no dead pixels, pretty durable even with young children pounding on it, etc). It was even dropped once, and I can't even find a scratch.

============

Ok, there were a couple complaints about dead pixels - first off, I had none. Perfect right out of the box.

I will add that I still can't believe how thin this monitor is. Under 1" thick, and the front bezel is almost non-existent - like 1/2" on the sides, and almost nothing on top. This is *all* screen. And while it isn't exactly feather-weight, it is remarkably light weight compared to similar sized HDTVs I've lifted or had to move.

For vibrancy, color depth, & size, it gets an easy 5-stars. This monitor does way more than even the box says (for example, daisy-chaining). This is by far the best, most versatile monitor I've ever owned. But it has some limitations and setup issues, which is the only reason I marked it down a bit. Here are some of the limitations:

I wanted the 21:9 AOC basically for 2 reasons: First, for the MHL split-screen feature (watching movies & other tasks from phone to monitor, while working on the other half of the screen). This is simple & works great (make sure your smartphone supports this).

Second, for multi-tasking. Sure I watch movies on the computer, and a few other applications (no gaming though), but I was mostly interested in the PBP (picture-by-picture), the PIP (picture-in-picture), and having 3 windows or documents side-by-side.

On the PIP, you are limited to 1 frame, and the settings are somewhat restrictive (can't move it around like a window). This seems strange to me - I should be able to add 2 or 3 additional picture boxes. The screen is certainly large enough LOL.

Also, the PBP will auto-split your screen in half, for example to view 2 different sources. But you can only input 2 sources at once (can't do 3, like one of the pictures in the ad seems to imply), and the input options are limited. There is only 1 VGA input and only 1 HDMI input - so make sure in advance this will work with your configuration.

After using the monitor a bit, it makes sense why the PHP only splits the screen in half (not thirds) - you can get 3 full documents to fit on the page side-by-side, but only 2 web pages will fit comfortably side-by-side (without tweaking or shrinking). I know it might sound like a waste to some people to use this monitor for document editing LOL, but often times I like to have my spreadsheet, my word processor, and then a small browser window open all at once. This is absolutely ideal for that kind of work.

Here are a few other notes & minor complaints:

The speakers are only 3 watt. They do pump out an impressive sound quality for being basically invisible, and keep in mind this is a monitor not a TV. Our family of 4 can hear the sound just fine when I'm playing a movie....but if your primary use is streaming &/or gaming, you won't be happy with these. A bit canny.

Also the onboard menu & CD setup is a little tedious, especially if you're looking to do something specific. The onboard buttons (real buttons, on the side of the monitor) are super small, and the sub-menus are just a lot of clicking around to get where you need.

Finally, there is no HDMI cable included, and no manual or paperwork at all. You have to use the enclosed CD-Rom for instructions or setup. This is basically a plug-and-play device (I don't mean to scare you LOL), but if you're looking to do something specific, then you have to dig through the CD-Rom.

If you want some help setting it up, or would just like a closer look at it before you buy, NewEgg has loaded an unboxing video on You-Tube, about 6 minutes long. Just do a search for "Newegg AOC Q2963PM". Hope this helps!

5Love it!
By Rob
I use this TV in the basement with a Roku 3 while working out on my bicycle trainer. I specifically did not want a smart TV because a lot of the research I found was that most of them are laggy and freeze up. I wanted to focus on getting a quality TV that was less than 32 inches, and use the dedicated 3rd party smart box, like the Roku 3. The Roku 3 which works great, has a lot of stuff, and has strong Wifi. I also plug my headphones into the remote on the Roku 3. I like how the TV has different brightness modes, along the line of stand, dynamic, and something else. I can't think of anything that I don't like about this TV.

I would definitely buy this TV again and I probably will for the cabin.

4Not the bleeding edge...and that's good
By Joe Z
I just unpacked it, hooked it up to both my cable and an external antenna and it works great! The menu system isn't quite intuitive, but I've seen worse. Just press a few wrong buttons and you'll figure it out.

I replaced my flip phone for a not-so-smart phone (Samsung Galaxy Centura) and I replaced my old flat screen CRT TV for this. In both cases I'm getting way more bang for the buck. My favorite things so far have to do with menu options. I can control the aspect ratio of the image so I get a realistic picture. Also, the speakers, while not great, are adequate, and there's an equalizer function to help old folks like me who lose a bit at the high end. It's not great, and speaker volume is marginal, but both work well in a small room.

All in all, it doesn't blow my socks off, but it does what it's supposed to do, does it well, and won't drain the bank account. 4 stars easy.

Angle of view is a bit of an issue. I sit a bit off to the side and the screen is a tad dark. If I rotate it both my wife and I can see it fine.

5A quality TV
By William Hortman
Ordered the LG 47LB6300 after my Samsung UN46C6300 went bad, and I will try to use this as my basis for comparison.

First off, the item came well packaged, and I paid a bit extra for a Saturday delivery via the Prime membership. It was worth it and came on time.

The 47LB6300 shipping weight (33.8lbs) was much lighter than the shipping weight of my old Samsung LED Tv (55lbs) and the delivery man had no problem carrying it up the front steps to my front door. He even helped me get into my front door. The non shipping weight of the LG TV is 28.4 LBS and I believe that includes the stand as well. Where as my Samsung was around 44. The reason I bring this up is because the TV was very easy for me to remove from the box from myself, but if you have help all the better, especially when it comes to putting on the stands.

The LG stands are very elegant and simplistic they only require two screen per stand and they are a but curvy. They hold up the TV very well and it is sturdy as well. I did order a wall mount but will not be doing that for a while due to a surgery and not being able to lift things. But when it comes time to wall mount it, I see no problems in being able to do it because the TV is so light and thin, and I should have help to mount it anyway making the process even easier after all the drilling and mounting of the bracket. I used the LG bracket finder on their website to find a compatible mount and settled for a Sanus bracket.

When you first turn on the TV it will take you straight into the Setup process. They use childish penguin animations to aid etc so it should be fun for kids to watch and it gives you a sense of the colors and HD qualities of the TV. I liked it, it was cool. You also have to use the included magic remote that came with the TV to do the setup. I believe there is an option of plugging the coaxial cable for your cable directly into the TV to use the LG Live TV feature, but I do not use this because I prefer to use my cable box hooked up through my Xbox one. So I can't speak about that feature.

This is my first personal smart TV but I have used others and I will say this LG has the best UI by far from the ones I have used; being Samsung and Sony. And the Magic Remote makes it easy to navigate through the options.

Since I keep on mentioning the Magic Remote. It is basically like a Wii controller. It uses a motion sensor so you're able to click and point on things on the television to select apps / options. Or you can use the arrows / wheel if you prefer. It does have a bit of a learning curve but it's definitely not difficult, just different.

The apps on the TV are Netflix, Hulu, Amazon etc the basic streaming services. To my knowledge writing this review on 4/23/14 the LG APP store is not up and running on this television yet.

Another reason I bought this TV is that both my mother and I have LG G2 smart phones. The App for this TV that can be found on the Google play store is still in "BETA" so there are still some issues with it and it is not ready by any means. They expect to release that functionality sometimes in the second half of 2014. I hope when it is done that it will make the TV easier to use via my phone. I should also say my Xbox One recognizes the LG TV and when I use the voice commands to turn on the system or turn the system off, it will also turn both the tv / cable box off and on.

Anyways back to the Apps. You will need to set up WiFi and the TV has a built in WiFi and that should be a quick and easy thing to set up. I have all the individual apps ready to be used on their on should I one day disconnect my Xbox that my family / friends can use those functions. The apps work great, I have had no issues with slow playback when using the TV apps to stream video content.

Okay, the picture quality. It is much better than my old Samsung. The LG is ready out of the box and I have found no need to tune the picture quality in mostly dimly lit room, or with sunlight when I have it in my room. The IPS panel really puts out vibrant and bright colors and offers a wider viewing angle. Everything appears to be much smoother than my old Samsung. Everything being basic TV play back, video games, blu-rays, etc. This TV even uses less electricity than my old Samsung.

Sound Quality. The sound quality out of box is decent too. It's 20W of power for the speakers. You can be the judge if you need a sound system or not. I am currently happy without one but I have been considering a sound bar that I can pair with my TV, computer, and phone so I can stream music and louder range of sounds and better bass. I am a man that likes utility, but having more sound would be a want not a need for me at the moment.

Oh and it also comes with a year free of netflix, I just filed for it today since there seemed to have been an issue claiming that particular LG promotion since they had to update the list of eligible LG TV's since this one is new for this year and that is always a plus. I also believe if you already have Netflix you can use that code on an existing account and get a 90 dollar something credit, which is great if you already have that service.

Here is a link to LG's Website about this TV if you want to look it up and find some more information. [...]

Thanks for reading and if anyone has any questions I will try my best to answer them. I am enjoying this TV a lot!

4Smart TV done right
By Camera Noobie.....
WebOS on the LG TV's is front and center, and not an afterthought. This is currently the best implementation of "Smart TV" technology. WebOS is quick and responsive. As of the writing of this review (4/12/14), the LG Store (app store) is not yet launched. So the only apps you have access to (installed by default) are: Neflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Skype, and a Web Browser. The web browser is ok, but not great. I have an Amazon account, and I can say that the experience is great with the amazon app. I am presuming Netflix works well too. In the amazon app, when you exit and return, it puts you right back into where you left off, nice feature.
The picture, sound and typical TV elements are great so I won't review those - needless to say I am very happy with the Audio/Video quality.
The TV was easy to mount on the wall using CheetahMount (another great product).
In regards to the remote control, this model using a "Magic Remote" which is sort of the shape of a Nintendo Wii Nunchuck (without the cable). It has no keypad on it, but an assortment of buttons and a clickwheel. The pointer on screen is easy to move and not overly sensitive. I will say, the remote is a bit difficult to get used to at first, but as with anything it gets easier, and it is easier after 1 day of use. I can't imagine someone not familiar with it, picking it up for he first time and using it correctly (like a babysitter or guest at your house). Intuitive - the remote is not. If it was intuitive, anyone (non tech or related) could pick it up and use it proficiently with a small learning curve. I will say though that it is 'innovative' though. The lack of the keypad though, makes it more difficult to use. It does work nicely with my DirectTV Genie system (again, takes a bit to get used too.) I still keep my DirectTV remote around, because most of the time the TV is just set to the DirectTV input, and it is easier for the rest of the family to just change the channels/DVR with the standard DirectTV remote.
Other notes: The free 1 year of Netflix when you buy the TV is not instant; you have to fill out an online form and wait for a response from LG and/or Netflix with the code, and they say it can take up to 3 weeks. That time frame is ridiculous, that could have been automated so you get instant access. Lastly, I ordered this though Amazon Prime, and it was delivered by Pilot courier. They were very fast and efficient, they unpacked it, tested the TV (plugged in that's all), and then offered to take the packaging boxes with them.
I can't give it 5 stars. If the Magic Remote was completly intuituve, they would have gotten 5 stars. If I could give 4 1/2 I would have.
I'm looking forward to seeing what other apps are released (facebook, pandora, etc).

4Good quality image and sound, native apps, wifi
By Morrigan Alexandros
This is a nice Smart TV with useful features and the possibilities of other ones once the App Store opens.

❶THE PHYSICAL SPECS - This is an 47 inch TV (or maybe around 46.8) that has a very thin metallic gray bezel. Even though it has a larger screen, it looks smaller than my old Samsung 40-Inch HDTV which had a larger frame. I measured the length and width of the TV and it is about 42 x 26.5. It is very thin and not that heavy. The TV has two curved T shaped stands. Very minimalistic. They are not adjustable and stand 38 inches apart. That was a bit annoying as I had to disassemble my TV stand to fit the TV. The TV does not pivot (as my Samsung did). This was a nice feature as I would be sitting at the other size of the living room and could just pivot the TV to angle my way.

❷THE MAGIC REMOTE. It is a small remote with a click wheel and point. Looks like a Wii controller. There is no physical keyboard on the remote. The click wheel helps you flip through channels. The TV has a 3D button but it is not a 3D TV. So, why keep it there for non-#D TVs? The TV Remote has voice recognition. I tried it and said "Menu". It thought I said "Milo." I tried again and it recognized it as "Menu" but then said there was no such feature. Sigh. If your Set Top box or other device has special features, you will not be able to control it with this remote. I have a Tivo and there are a lot of features it cannot do. I have been trying to have the TV recognize the Tivo remote as the one for the TV but no luck yet. I can change channels with the Tivo remote, but cannot control sound or mute, nor can I change between input devices. This is a bit annoying.

I have not been able to get my Tivo remote to pair up. Any help appreciated.

❸INSTALLATION - The guided installation process was easy and intuitive. It took about 20 minutes. It was cute and animated. There was a penguin involved. During the installation you will be able to set the cable provider or the antenna. You can also set it to Eco saving mode. I have a Tivo so it was a bit of a workaround to set this up.

❹WIRELESS OR WIRED SETUP. This TV can connect through the internet through WiFi. I tried both the wired and wireless installations. The wired one too about half a minute since the only thing you have to do it plug in the ethernet cable. For the wifi installation, the TV recognized all the wireless networks around my house. The rest is the same as when you are login in your device to your wifi network. After trying both, I kept it as a wired connection.

❺USER INTERFACE. The LG Smart TV has a very easy to use user interface. It is very intuitive and easy to navigate. When in doubt, click the Home button and it gets you to the main menu.

❻APPS. Neflix, Hulu Plus, Vudu, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube, Skype, and a Web Browser. I plugged in my login info for Netflix and it ran fine. It has a nice interface.

The YouTube interface was also fine. Not having a physical keyboard made things annoying as you have to point and click each letter. But, YOUTUBE has a nice feature where you can pair the TV to your mobile device (phone or tablet) and you can search and play for and play the video and transmit to the TV. Sooooo very useful. This is a great feature.

The Web browser is not the fastest but it you can choose between Bing, Google and Yahoo. You can have more than one browser window open and it is easy to navigate between the windows. No Flash plugin. You can easily play video in the browser or open it with YouTube. Works pretty well. It doesn't allow you to download docs. Or, at least, it didn't allow me when I tried it.
I will update this as I use the other apps.

❼PICTURE QUALITY. The most important part. How good is the image quality. It is not the best I have seen and I think Sony and Samsung TVs are better in this department. But, it looks good, really good. It was a bit dull in color at the beginning. But, I played with the settings a bit and now it is perfect. Really Vivid quality. If you prefer it has preset settings of Vivid, Standard, Eco, Sports, Cinema and a few others. I tried it with different ones and Vivid seemed to best right now. I flip through different shows, movies and sports. For the sport fans, this TV is great for that. You can discern hair. And in the soccer match last night, someone had way too greasy hair (no, not one of the players). Netflix also looked great on it. Good picture quality.

❽OVER THE AIR AND MOBILE DEVICES. It uses Miracast. No option for iPhone that I know about. I am still trying to do this with my iPhone and iPad. It seems to be easier for Android devices. Any help with this is appreciated as well.

❾SOUND. It sounds pretty good. It is not that loud. Even setting it at its loudest won't bring my next door neighbors asking me to turn it down. Might not even bother someone in the next room. But, a sound bar is not necessary for me right now. Small apartment and all. If you have a big place, get a sound bar.

I am still playing with the TV, so I will update more as time passes.

4Samsung Second Generation 4k UHD - I Am Weak - I Had To Buy
By Carter H
This is the best picture quality of any TV I have had. It is a 4K TV and even though there isn't any 4K content yet without getting movie on a hard drive and paying out the nose. This Samsung upscales the content up and it looks pretty darn great. Noticeably sharper then others that I looked at. The sound is also very good. There are plenty of smart features and internet hookup without having any external devices like Roku, Apple TV. Upconverts any source inputted. Samsungs latest backlighting technology.

I bought the TV for the picture quality not really for the 3D. Most of the smart features are just extra pluses.
It does a decent job of upscaling the HD content, but remember it is trying to upscale from HD to near 4K and the information is just not there for it to do real 4K. It, for the lack of better terms, makes a guess on what 4K should be. That withstanding it does guess well, and will offer a better picture than standard HD, just not UHD so expect that. Samsung isn't talking about what the specs are for the up scaling at the time of this review.

Pros:
1. Excellent color and sharpness. Also controls to can easily adjust the picture to any way you wish (moe color saturation, less saturation, sharpness, brightness, etc) Lots of smart features I am still learning.

2. Excellent sound upgrade from standard HD Samsungs. For the price it should have good sound huh.

3. Watching Lord Of The Rings On This Will Make You Cry

4. 3D works great and comes with four sets of glasses.

Cons:
1. Dialog box pops up telling you that you can use voice controls. This is very distracting and I don't need the a dialog box on the TV to pop up to tell me this. Its in the instructions booklet. It doesn't happen very often- but it is annoying. You can disable this but it takes some time to dig through the screens until you are there.

2. Heavier than standard HD versions of Samsungs, like the 8000. Good info for those mounting on wall.

3. No Content to justify early adopter purchase price.

4. Friends watching Lord Of The Rings (Also crying picture is so good) begain plotting to take "Precious" from us.

There is just nothing to watch right now and the prices of these 4K sets are going to drop at least another 500 just like when the HD sets came on the scene. Plus the 4k technology will most likely get better when they decide just how the content is going to be implemented. On the upside Samsung uses what they call a Hub or One Connect box so if content inputs get better you can just replace the hub box instead of kicking yourself that you have to get a new set.

I tried the Netflix 4K streaming and it's a mixed bag at this stage. Some of the nature documentaries look like 4K and some look more like 1080P.

The UHD dvd players are coming so if you have this Samsung you will be ready from day one. I think even the xbox is going to offer 4k content when connected. Does have a superior picture than non UHD tv's. Its just gonna cost ya a little more brother. I had to have it. I couldnt wait. My current tv died on me and I had to do something. The only thing I could rationalize, being addicted to great new technology, was to go into debt to feed my habit. I am so ashamed at my weakness.

In all seriousness:
My suggestion is if you must have the latest 4k tech then here it is. Much better than Sony especially with their no customer service. The LG's do look good, just not this good.

UPDATE 4-25-2014

Ok there has been a big controversy on whether this model comes with a one connect box or not. You get a different story everywhere. Found a Samsung training representative who spent two hours educating me on every 4k tv on earth and what was what. One Connect; 2013 version of this model had the external One Connect box. 2014 version of this model has internal One Connect with no external box. When One Connect technology is updated you can get the external box and it overrides the internal to keep everything cutting edge. He said samsung is supporting One Connect for a guaranteed four years to guard against your tv becoming obsolete. I asked him about the 1080p to 4k upscaling. He said yes it does a good job at kicking up standard HD better than Sony or LG, but if you want to see something great, get a 4K bluray player, then he drug me around to show what it could do. It was very impressive. He shared a story about the 9000 which requires an external One Connect box to opperate as all the technology is in the box and the tv is basically a monitor, said stores all over the place are misplacing the boxes when they move a tv and have all these dead big screens everywhere. This TV is a keeper.

5You get what you pay for!
By BROMER
After seeing this in person at the local Best Buy, I decided to take the plunge and bring home the 65" UN65HU8550 on 04/16/14. Setting up the TV was easy, although two people were needed to lift this beast onto the stand. The setup menu was easy to navigate, and the system update only took 7 minutes over wifi.

The picture has got to be the best I've seen! I'm not an A/V diehard, but I know when a picture looks vibrant and I can spot the issues. I ran my own personal non-scientific tests using Disney's Planes on a Sony BDP-S590 blu-ray player and the picture was fantastic. The level of detail was second to none, and there was no motion blur to speak of. During the scene where Dusty is flying in the thunderstorm at night, the black levels were the best I've seen on an LED tv--they looked like they would on a top-level plasma. The picture showed no light bleed or clouding during the lightning strikes, and the detail stayed crisp throughout. Test #1 passed with flying colors.

I then tested the 3D with the previously mentioned blu-ray player using Star Trek: Into Darkness 3D. The tv comes with four sets of active 3D glasses. Again, setup was a breeze as it literally took pressing one button to pair the glasses with the tv. Watching Star Trek, I ran the scene where the Enterprise is battling with the Dreadnought in outer space. Overall the 3D was impressive. Some level of detail was lost on background objects in most scenes (as is expected when watching 3D), but the detail on objects that were the main focus of the scene were above & beyond better than I expected. You could literally count the hairs on Captain Kirk's head, in 3D no less! Again the black levels were fantastic and colors seem true to life. 4K was not tested as there is virtually no content out there yet.

Pros: The picture quality is a huge plus on this TV. Oddly enough, the embedded speakers weren't half bad for the short time I had them on (not too "tinny" with decent mids and highs). Of course, if you're spending this much on a tv, you probably have a halfway decent sound system to run it through and won't use the speakers anyway (I know I won't be using them).

Cons: The TV does not come with a One Connect box. All the online literature makes it look like it has one, but what it is really saying is that it is compatible with the One Connect for upgrades in the future. The owner's manual confirms this. Also, there is no camera for the gesture control--it is also sold separately. By no means are these deal breakers, just trying to clear up those items.

Overall, if you spend the money on this thing, you'll be impressed.

5Awesome TV you will love it but set it up!

[Side Note: I believe Samsung should provide free 2014 One connect boxes to F9000 owners because of the H265 codec and HDMI 2.0 as a gesture of good faith toward early adopters.]

This review will help you get the most out of your HU8550.

I am posting here because some people badmouthed and down rated the Samsung F9000 because they did not know how to use it. I do not want the same thing to happen to this excellent TV. I have last year's top-of-the-line F9000 4K model which is virtually the exact same TV as this, released just over 5 months earlier.

I cannot believe how absolutely amazing the picture is. It's colors explode, it's blacks are black, it's whites are white, flesh tones are real, and all of it is super sharp. With newscasts or interviews, people look like they're sitting right in front of you. Aerial shots of cities will blow you away. You cannot ask for a better picture. And that's not just my opinion, read all of the professional reviews. Every single one of them love this TV.

Do not worry about 4K content not being available. This TV upscales. Go to Samsung .com and check the US news section. I quote it in the comments section. The upscaling works fantastic with anything in HD (1080P). It also works with SD material but not as well. I can honestly tell you that I do not want a sharper picture than this. You can see every facial feature including eyelashes. Blu Rays and 4K YouTube's will make you cry.

Any person giving this TV anything less than five stars reveals their own foolishness, or they got a weird factory defect. BUT you have to set it up, and if you are a newbie to electronics you have three options.
1. Learn how to set it up and enjoy i. It is very easy.(I will help you in this post).
2. If you're too lazy, don't buy a piece of high-quality electronic equipment like this. You don't deserve it.
3. Pay someone to calibrate it for you. Actually that's a waste of money because in 20 minutes you can do it yourself with this post. You can make this TV look anyway you want it to look. Which is why comparisons in stores is superfluous unless you make all settings equal.

Out of the box the picture looks disappointing , that's Samsung's fault, although most manufacturers do the same thing for the stores. When I first turned on this TV it looked like a soap opera or documentary. I knew this was not right.

The first thing you have to do is go to the System menu and find the Eco-Solution Submenu and turn OFF the accursed eco-saving feature and eco-sensor. I already printed the professional review I read on CNET for the F9000. They have some people there that are among the best in the industry. A professional named Katzmaier uses $30,000 worth of equipment to calibrate these TVs. Don't know if I can post links here, so search for CNET's HDTV picture settings forum forUN65f9000 or HU8550-a bit early for this as of this date.

However, there's one problem with their settings. They calibrate their TVs in a dark room. Therefore their brightness levels are way too low. They acknowledge this, but it is a necessary starting point and equalizer for the different models. No problem, use Samsung's default settings for your Backlight, under the Movie setting(12). It worked great with gamma at +1. The first thing you want to do is set it to Movie mode. Play with other modes later.

---------------------

The settings I'm about to list are based on Katzmaier's (get them and print them out) with some tweaks of my own. I went between his and the defaults, that's safe. If you set your TV to these, you will love the picture. If not, tweak it for yourself somewhere between his settings and the defaults.

It is very easy, so don't freak out. If you can turn your volume control up and down you can change your settings. The settings have a combined effect, so do not just do one area.

How to set a fantastic picture and remove Motion blur:

Picture menu - I use all Samsung's defaults for Movie mode with a slight color tweak

mode: Movie - the most important change.
backlight: 12 - CNET's setting of 7 is way too low unless you are in a dark room. We use lamps at my house. Backlight is the main brightness control

contrast: 95 -
brightness: 45 - leave this alone
sharpness: 20 - CNET setting of 0 Is Way too low, especially for a 4K TV
color: 52 0r 53 - a slight tweak over 50 that will give you more of a richer plasma TV quality
tint: 50/50 - leave this alone

I discovered the real trick for getting the correct lighting level for your room is to work with gamma and backlight, not brightness. Samsung's default is 45 for all modes, and it's right.

Advanced settings submenu
dynamic contrast: off
flesh tone: zero
RGB only mode: off
color space: custom - there is a submenu for this below.

White balance: see below.
10 P white balance: - you don't need to mess with this.
Gamma: +1 this is an important setting and affects the entire picture, not just contrast.
Expert pattern: off
motion lighting: off
black enhancer: off

Color Space Submenu
I recommend keeping everything at default rather than using the ones from CNET. However, I do not like the cold picture of LEDs as compared to plasma or my old Pioneer elite 98 which had the best picture ever in its day and even for today except for sharpness. Therefore I change the blue setting to this:
blue: red 2, green 2, blue 46. Not drastic changes over 0, 0, 50 but it's warmer.
And change the yellow setting to have less blue than the CNET setting
yellow: red 50, green 50, blue 6 (Katzmaier had blue at 14)

White Balance - use all of the Katzmaier's settings: 25, 24, 22, 23, 24, 26

Picture Option Submenu -
color tone: warm 2 - important, this also gets rid of the cold blue LED effect
digital clean view: off
MPEG noise filter: off
film mode: auto one
auto motion plus: custom. Make sure you change it to custom.
Smart LED: high

Auto Motion Plus Submenu. Numerous sources recommend these to remove motion blur.
blur reduction: 10
judder reduction: 0 yes, zero
LED clear motion: - not much visible difference either way. Leave it on if you increased backlight to the default.

System Menu. As already mentioned go to the eco-solution submenu and shut off energy-saving and eco-sensors. They will knock your picture into dismal oblivion at will.

Complaint Section
1. Samsung - Stop defeating your own purpose with the horrible original settings

2. People do not want the ridiculous hand controls that only work half the time at best, or the worthless voice controls the get activated by the TV program you're watching. Thanks for the great picture though, stick with what matters.

3. Your privacy policy stinks. I want to be able to mirror my TV to my tablet and cell phone without doing your lousy Samsung All Share that makes me agree to privacy policies that promise you you have NO privacy, and sit a Samsung representative in your living room every time I watch the TV. NO Thanks.

*** In all fairness to Samsung, the Smart View app in the Android Play store (probably Apple too)does let you wirelessly stream content from the TV to your device (phone tablet,...)and use it as a remote. To wirelessly have content from the phone go to the TV, use the Source button at the top center of the remote and go to Mirror, then go to your settings menu on the phone and activate screen mirroring. You do not have to register with Samsung for these features.

Why you should get this TV
1. Best picture of any TV on the market. I sometimes pause the TV just to look at it.

2. It is future proof. Because it is 4K, the screen is capable of outstanding resolution for a long time to come. There's another great benefit - the Evolution kit. This TV write up by Samsung and thus Amazon is unclear. It has the evolution Kit but NOT the One connect box. To get it, you have to get the HU9000 model which costs more money, and has a useless curvature feature which is only on the 9000 model. However, the write up infers One-connect future upgrades. My guess is that they will upgrade this unit and all 4K units with one One-connect for all, but see below.

3. It really looks elegant.

What about this new 2014 8550 compared to last years 4K F9000?
Hurry and get the F 9000 before they sell out. Amazon's price and service are both good and you save around $500. The picture, CPU, memory, everything will be the same as the F9000 which is only six months older, and clear motion rate is the same. Its true. HDTVvs.com has a comparison and the main difference is the smart hub software. You can save $500.00 and get a 4K blu-Ray with the diff.

However, F9000 has two advantages. The One-connect box is a seperate unit that houses the CPU, memory, main board, firmware, and smart TV software. This is better than the evolution kit in the HU8550 because the connectors are also replaceable, and heat is kept separate from the screen. A true One connect box is still on the H9000If you know anything about computers or electronics, you know that the CPU, memory, and motherboard generate the most heat. The one connect box separates from the screen itself and you have less cable clutter as well. Mine is a few feet under the screen. The One-connect box is a genius idea that Samsung should employ for all of its TVs, and so should every other manufacturer of high-end TVs. The 8550 is "One connect ready" for future updates but for now its evolution kit is on the TV.

Although the 8550 model does do 4 screens, this is not with 4 channels, but 4 different inputs. Which isn't really needed. Updates to Smart hub are superfluous compared to the F9000.
Another thing. The base is nowhere near as stable or as cool looking as the arch base on the F9000.

Bottom line: If you can still get the F9000 do so, but both TVs are spectacular; I mean literally amazing. Be sure to set it up right and anyone you show this TV to will pick up their jaw off the floor. You will love the picture and the features. You will also save big time over the HU9000 with its gimmick curved screen.
