Nice approach
By Paul Derby
I've been running the UniFi AP AC for a couple of days. I'm impressed with the thought put into the software controller interface and the ease of configuring these access points. Going through the upgrade from 2.4.1 (software on the unit received) to 2.4.4 and on to 3.1.3 was straightforward and painless. I've only run the device in test mode with several clients, but initial performance is on par with a Ruckus 7363 for clients connecting with 802.11n on the 5 GhZ transceiver. I don't have any 802.11ac devices to test yet, but that is only a matter of time before these clients appear.
I measured the temperature at the center of the back of the unit I have and it runs at 110 degrees F. when wall mounted with the air flow gap behind the unit. The Ruckus 7363 runs at 80 degrees F. wall mounted so the UniFi AP-AC does run hot with 3.1.3 software. Hopefully code optimization will improve the operating temperature . You probably don't want to set it flat on anything that is heat sensitive that doesn't let air circulate behind the unit. If you do the temperature rises past 125 degrees F.
The access point looks nice and pleasing for a professional office and public environment. The blue rectangle light lets users know at a glance if the device is functioning with white and flashing light or no light if the device won't connect users. The printed documentation is excellent and the web site had plenty of easy to find and valuable details.
I've given this product a 4 for the amount of thought and work that is present in this unit at this stage of release. The version 3 software that has all the features is beta and the device is early in it's life cycle. The approach of having a software controller is a big step forward in convenience and cost savings. I would not hesitate to use this AP in small offices where one or two will suffice and take that risk that Ubiquity will solve the heat and feature challenges as you gain familiarity with this AP and AP management approach and support 802.11ac if needed in critical office areas. If things don't work out, you can toss them out in a few years and go back to whatever is already in place. If things do work out, you can use Ubiquiti's UniFi AP AC as a way to begin introduction of 802.11ac into the workplace while making management of WiFi easy and less expensive with hardware controllers.

Nice upgrade from the UAP-PRO
By Kevin
We used these to replace a few UAP-PROs, and are really happy with the upgrade. 802.11ac is noticeably faster for devices that support it, and we're getting better range than the UAP-PROs. They also don't have the noisy power supply that some UAP-PRO units did.
They're currently expensive, but worth it if you need the speed.

Seamlessly fits into any Ubiquiti network already in place!
By Jason Shurb
Just all around great; none of the issues of the previous generation, in fact the software upgrade that is already installed on the UAP-AC gives your previous AP-Pro, AP-LR, and regular APs new features and new life. You cannot go wrong buying these in place of the expensive branded AC units, you can accommodate the same number of users, have a better UI and have cash left over if you do find a dead spot you need to fill in. Pull the trigger, I did and am happy with the decision.
